What are your pet hates in the horsey world?

Over-rugging,

People who borrow stuff and don't return or replace it.

The comment "your horse is wasted doing xyz" No horse is ever wasted if it's loved and well cared for.

People who lie. My horse did blah blah blah.

Hogging.

Those who don't do their share of the grotty jobs like poo picking.

Over bitting/gadgeting or in inexperienced hands,it drives me mad (I once saw a horse on a funride on the bottom ring of a dutch gag, a mexican grackle, cavisson and standing martingale), where do you go if your still having problems!? My old instructer had a great phrase (don't put more gadgets on ride it better! and 9 times out of 10 this is true!

Shitty dealers who advertise they are selling privatly, idiots who clearly don't know what they are talking about, poor husbandry, shitty tails, extra smelly rugs, those who talk a good job, children on harmless ponies with dutch gags in their poor mouths, rude drivers who don't slow down, rude horse riders who don't say thankyou, people that gallop past your dressage test in case they are late for their jumping, bad floors in trailers, poo picking rained on poo, over fat horses and ponies, scum bags who mistreat horses, those travelling type people who blast their horses and traps up and down main roads, um, no I think I'm pretty accepting otherwise!

Snobby types who are false and dont deserve to have horses, who throw money at it but dont have horses purely because of their appreciation for this wonderful animal.

Mud.

People who ridicule others for their lack of skills or knowledge instead of actually helping them to learn or find out.

Lorries that dont slow down.

People that put muddy girths over the saddle after riding GRRRR!!

Horses that turn their ruddy lights on in the night whacking the leccy bill up!

Horsey types that worry about what other people think instead of just enjoying themselves!! - who cares!!

People that dont get the vet out and ask on a forum instead......tee hee!!

i dont like haynets either, i would rather just a hay bar or similar.

and not an item, but i hate deep littering (burying the wee) my riding teacher does it, and i have to do it in eddies stable this week! i hate it!

i also hate people who think they are more special than others. snobbery. we have a few at our yard and im sure almost every yard has someone like it.

people who are snobby about coloured cobs

people who look down on you for not having the most expensive task/riding gear when you meet them out on a hack. Daisy only cares if its comfortable, not what badge there is on her tack or what I look like

People who do the girths up too tightly too quickly, completly ignoring the horse when it pulls a face and tries to bite. Then they smack the horse for pulling a face. Hello?! The horse is trying to tell you something here!!!

People who leave brushing boots on their horses all day long, every day when they are turned out. Do they have any idea how much the legs are overcooking with boots on like that?

And then badly fitting saddles !

And people who are obsessed with fiddling a horses head down using their hands to saw the mouth down.

Immaculate horses and riders! Even at this time of year, without a speck of mud!

People who ride without hi viz.

Again, snobbery because our horses are coloured and/or cob types.

Ill fitting tack. Drives me nuts to see curb chains too long, with the curb bit ineffective, also curb chains on pelhams which aren't run through the bit ring, and therefore pinch the corner of the mouth.

My biggest pet hate at the moment - horses and riders who can't do gates - because that is me and my boy, and he flatly refuses to learn at the age of 15!

ungrateful children, who think it is their god given right to have a 10k pony... which is of course looked after for them.

The obsession with having a horse "on the bit" when lots of the time the hosre has been fiddled forced down in front and isnt using itself as it should.....

The blumming cost of everything!!!!

People who only ride their horses in circles in the school

Yard politics, people who think they have a right to tell others what to do when half the time they know less themselves, people who take their tempers out on their horses (especially when they don't win at competitions) and people who have a horse for the image and not an innate love for them as animals.

When I bought Min, I joined a new riding club set up this year to develop local equestrianism. Nine months in, I find I avoid any events/ training sessions they set up as it is soooo bitchy. Everyone has an opinion on everybody else's horse's conformation/ ability and riding ability and I hate it. There's lots of backstabbing and slagging off but they're oh-so-nice when face to face. I'm always of the opinion that if people mouth off to me behind others backs, what do they say about me behind my back? I strongly doubt that I will renew my membership in the new year. I would love the horse scene to develop up here as its currently barely existent but some of the main players are the worst and I would rather plod about on my own, hacking and schooling alone than be a part of that.

People who put bailing string around stable door hinges then tie the horses to it. I've seen three horses pull the bl**dy doors off and go running round the yard with them. Scary but some people never seem to learn. Also stupid petty rules that have nothing to do with safety or common sense.

Haynets I think they are dangerous and horses naturally eat off the floor anyway!!
Seeing people riding without the keepers on their bridal done up that really bugs me.
Also if your hacking out with someone and they just barge past you without warning sending your horse in to a bloody fruitloop moment!!!
Also people that are blissfuly ignorant to what there horses are atcually doing.

People who think they know everything but know nothing.......

Water buckets with metal handles, one of mine got caught up in hers and took the skin of her front leg from knee down, it was horrid. Know use rubberised buckets....

I don't like nylon headcollars either, all mine have leather ones.

Oh and MUD, hate it........

Horses being strapped down by gadgets

Almost all gadgets

Snobbery

Over rugging

And people giving horses a far too 'big' clip for the work they will be doing.

Nothing except mud.
I generally like horsey people...and horses....I try not to interfere in other people's ways unless they ask me. And I quickly rebuff any advice/interference I receive which is unsought too.
I am confident enough not to feel I have to justify what I do and when...

Ignorant people that know there's ragwort in the field and they just leave it.

Spoilt Brats that don't realise how lucky they are to have 3 ponies all worth £3500+. And then moan when they are asked to go back to the lorry to tack up and UN-tack!

Unnecessary gadgets on kids ponies.

'Know It All's' taking the P1$$ out of people that don't enjoy the same things as them. Everyone to there own!

People that look down on Cob owners!

Martingales used for no reason.
Boots used for no reason.
Fierce bits used for no reason, why not a snaffle!

DIY liveries who moan constantly about other DIY liveries, insinuate that they are negletting their horses, critisize anyone who make different welfare decisions for their horse and generally be a constant source of irritation and unpleasantness.

People who prefer to overbit rather than school their horses

Small children who cry and smack/kick/yank their ponies if they don't get a clear round. Actually, scrap that, make that PARENTS who tollerate this behaviour more than once. My kid's pony would be in the back of horse and hound before the kid had dismounted and untacked if they treated it like that.

Otherwise I am pretty laid back.

'Hate' is a strong word - but apart from any mistreatment of horses, which of course we all hate, I do get annoyed by people who assume their way of doing things is best and get all smug and holier-than-thou about it. There is too much preaching and pontificating and fanaticism. I wish people could be more open-minded.

Having said that, I do believe that at least 90% of horsey people are nice and decent and well-meaning - it's only a small minority who spoil things sometimes.

People who ride on the roads without wearing Hi-Viz (clearly do not have the welfare of their horse at interest and fail to acknowledge motorists that take care when passing them (a nod of the head and a smile is sufficient).

Haynets!!! Having found my TB caught up in one after rolling with colic! however i also hate people who tie a haynet straight to the ring! There is a piece of string there for a reason! USE IT!

Cruelty/neglect people who want horses but cant be bothered to get off their backsides and treat them properly.

People who ride on roads/verges without hi -viz, thats really thoughtless.

People who buy young just backed horses for novice riders.

CR**** dealers who sell (and buy!) as private, then sell a just backed and very willfull horse to a nervous novice who just isnt good enough, but blames YOU because they have a horse they cant do anything with, yet you advertised it as grass green and NOT for a novice!!!!!!!!GGGRRRRRRRRRRRR

People (dealers or private) who tell lies about a horse just to sell it.

I hate horses stabled 24/7 (unless there is a good reason) its not healthy and its not natural.

oh and another thing i hate/dont like

people overpricing their horses, yes some do it, but i mean really overpricing their horses, like 3k or more over a resonable price for the pony/horse in question.

a girl down my yard has a 13.3hh ex show pony who bucks, bites, barges, refuses jumps alot, (and the little b*gger kicked me!) etc but apparantly he is the best pony in the world and no-one else could get a pony better than him! she said she would want at least 7k for him if she ever sold him but would really want 10k?!?!

i mean, come on, who wants a 13 yr old british ridng pony gelding that does all of the above? i think she is selling his show name more than anything! (but apparantly she will never sell him!)
