What are your pet hates....

Likes:
- Whiskers! (not against removing the ones that sit under a flash noseband though to stop them getting caught)
- Leather & brass (clencher browbands! :D)
- People who actually realise that you have to put effort into horses to get anything back
- Sympathetic riders
- Slim, hairy cobs under 14.2hh
- Small horses
- Good stuff ;)

Hates:
- Horses not actually getting ENOUGH feed, just because a horse is fat doesn't mean starve it! :(
- Narrow minded people
- Instructors who wont let you ask questions
- Horses/people with no manners
- Bad stuff :p

Disclaimer -This is just my personal preference and is not intended to offend anyone on here or their horse.

Hates:
Feathers
Gypsy cobs with manes down to the ground
Horses with upside down necks
soup plate feet
small boxy feet
flat feet
big sticking out chestnuts
willies with bits of 'stuff' sticking to them
bridles wih no noseband
bling
flashes done up too tight
rub marks from rugs

Likes
Plain brown leather tack
cavesson noseband
Atherstone girth with elastic at both ends
Half wool lined numnahs
Leather Breastplates (Don't have one but they look great)
whiskers left on
tidy manes
horses that carry their tails nicely
shiny bays
Good well shod feet
A bay with a white star
Dapple greys with either all black or all white mane and tail.

Pity my girl is a grey mud magnet with a loo brush mane :(

HATE:
The white bridles you sometimes see in flat racing.
Actually hate flat racing - prefer national hunt.
People yakking on mobiles when out hacking on the road.
Riders not thanking motorists when they slow down

A couple that spring to mind but there are loads more....

People who drag their horse in from the field after its been out for hours and within five minutes are tacked up and on board, for gods sake, it makes me so angry. Also there are a couple of people on my yard who insist on leaving their horses tied up with the headcollar around their necks, Ive tried telling them but they know best obviously :(

I also cant stand the type of person who treats their horse like a machine and just schools and schools, they never "talk" to their horse unless its to tell the poor thing off, no pats or carrots. I dont hack on the road because of traffic issues but I try to give my horse fun by going round the fields or jumping, I hate it personally (coz im a wimp) but I do it for him not for me!

OOH I do find this interesting... I was asking because a friend and I were talking about what we like with regards to presentation/turnout and ended up having a rather hilarious arguments about the merits of the hogged mane on a cob (I hate them, she loves them).

I would never look down on or laugh at someone whose horse was dressed up and turned out in a way that I don't like - it's personal preference. But I do find it really interesting how much opinions differ on this! I'm sure we all agree about the things people have put that aren't anything to do with the appearance of the horse, for instance : being able to ask instructors questions, people who spend good quality time with their horse on the ground etc. but I think it's amazing just how much opinions on a "smart" looking horse differ! Thank you everyone!

Haven't read beyond the first post so here goes;

Dirty tack. No need for it.

Shabby appearance of horse and/or rider. Even out hacking! :o.

Not thanking drivers when they slow down for you. A smile and nod is fine if you can't take your hands off the reins.

Blingy tack, such as patent leather bridles etc :o.

Loves:

Traditional turnout.

People who obviously love and enjoy their horses, no matter what level they're at.

A smart and tidy yard :D.

People who don't look down on us happy hackers :D.

Love :D
Whiskers
As basic tack as possible
Riding a horse thats been dragged in from the field and brushed off, in shorts with loose hair, rather than spending 2 hours grooming and getting ready then having no time to ride.
Poo picking!!
Looking after your stuff - expensive of not!
Getting out and about with your horse as much as poss, even if it is the local fun show
Horses looking tidy, clean and workman like -- no frills
Grooming

Hates :(
People worrying too much about matching, new, sparkling things - they are lovely but I canae be bothered.
People over clipping, over rugging, riding in school every day, jumping the same jump over and over and over and over just to try and get a good pic :S
People see-sawing at reins in order to get an outline

likes:

people who let horses be horses i.e. allow them to go out without a rug and roll in the mud because they like it & if it takes a bit longer to groom, so what.
people who enjoy their horse their way - if you only want to hack fine, if you want to conquer badminton fine, but don't look down on those who just want to do things differently. A horse is not wasted just because it isn't out conquering the world.

dislikes:

rugging of horse in summer just because you don't want the sun to bleach their coats - arrgghhh!

Starzan - you'd hate me and my girl :D she's got hobbity ears, whiskers and has black tack because I like the way it looks against her grey coat, I never pull her mane (we only hack) and theirs always some mud I've missed grooming off her somewhere :p

Hate, people thinking you need to be fully correctly turned out for hacking/schooling, as long as the saddle patch is clean.

Hate, bling and pink, what is wrong with practical workmanlike colours.

Hate that I have never found a hairnet that adequately contains my hair.

Manes that look like they've been hacked with scissors.

Love plaited tails.

Love arabs, cobs and M&Ms with flowing manes and tails.

Love leather headcollars

Love string girths, why don't you see them anymore???

Oh dear lord, i could write an essay

Hates:
people not using fly masks/ using badly fitted ones - once saw a tiny little section A be turned out with one for a rather large cob!
people who dont pick out feet very often
horses left in their tack for hours on end
people who dont spend time bonding with their horse
people who dont dig up ragwort
badly fitting tack
dirty sheaths

I could go on

Likes:
Clean tack
A good bond between horse & owner
well mannered horses
well mannered riders

Love:
Whiskers
Shetlands with trace clips in the winter lol
Full mane and tail on natives, arabs and traditional as long as it isnt OTT

Hate;
Too much tack on a horse
Wierd coloured tack though this is just personal preference
People lunging/handling with flipflops on (Im squeamish about battered toenails)
Snobbery
oh, and the word Poppo;)

Hate, people thinking you need to be fully correctly turned out for hacking/schooling, as long as the saddle patch is clean.

That would be me :o. To be fair, I don't mean full-on show turnout, just jods and rugby top with the right footwear. Not tracksuit bottoms and jod boots as I have seen in the past....

Love string girths, why don't you see them anymore???

Best bet for those is eBay and horsey car boots. I got about half a dozen various sizes from a horse car boot for about £3 the lot :D.

hates:

-People who buy horses as some kind of status thing- and know nothing (not saying i know every thing but some basic knowelege surely!!)
-feilds that are full of poo
-People who ask advice/opinion from every one then ignore it, then ask me the same question days later !
-people who use my stuff with out asking!
-people who buy all the nice things i.e clothes but wont by basics and use every one elses (picthforks, wheelbarrows)
-cheap poor quality tack
-ill fitting saddles

loves:
good quality tack
people who dont big themselves/horse up
big beds
nice hay at reasonable prices

Actually I don't like to see people riding in clothes other than jodhs/breeches and boots. Hate to see wellies or trainers especially. DH really can't bear to see people riding in trousers that aren't joddies or breeches, makes him cringe. Surprising number of men won't wear them though.....

It was more that for hacking and schooling, you don't have to match, a bit of mud doesn't hurt, rather than being an out and out scruff. I'll confess I won't ride in my joules tops, that is saved for "best" and I wear old t-shirts or jumpers that are too scruffy for wearing anywhere other then the yard. OOps

Oh and I'll check out ebay for string girths when I actually find a horse, not much point buying girths when I haven't got a horse or a saddle ;)

Yes, I'll agree with all that :D. One of the worst sights I've ever seen has stuck in my head and it was two teenaged girls, riding two (in the circumstances, extremely well behaved cob types) down a main road. Said girls were in strap tops, tracksuit bottoms with trainers and the other in wellington boots. Their skull caps were fastened to the D-rings of the saddle, hair loose and flying everywhere, reins like washing lines and feet stuck all the way home in the stirrups. In their wisdom, they decided to ride in to the garage on the main road and leave both horses tied outside while they went and bought chocolate and crisps.
The horses looked a state. Brambles in their tails and caked mud on hindquarters etc.

I was horrified! Even at the tender age of 14/15! Apart from the safety aspect, they looked an absolute disgrace  . Not trying to be snobby but basic horse sense wouldn't have gone amiss and the poor horses deserved better I think.

Like you say, doesn't have to be best turnout but jods/breeches, riding boots or jod boots and an ordinary top is more than fine for schooling and hacking.

I've just looked on eBay and there are the grand total of three string girths listed, one a dressage girth . They're either so popular people ae hanging on to them or so unpopular that they've been used to death and/or binned.

Agree with Gluttonfor punishment though I do tidy mane with solo comb.

Must add can't stand people who don't hack with Hi Viv. I wear hat band, and Tabard, pony wears leg bands.

People who ride in anything other than boots and gaiters or long boots - why ride in dunlop wellies?!
Long hair under a riding hat which isnt tied up
Fringes poking out under hats
People who dont put boots on low enough - brushing boots dont sit up on the knee joint!
People who cant hang bridles up properly - how difficult can it be?
Tying horses up with a heacollar round the neck
The person who puts the poop scoop in my horses feed bucket EVERY DAY WITHOUT FAIL even though it is obviously a clean bucket with feed in and a cover over it. Grrrr.

Loves :D

-Nice tidy manes and tails

-People who don't mind getting up early to muck out, feed etc

-People who spend time with their horses, instead of just turning up to ride then buggering off

-No whiskers

-Basic clean tack

-On time farriers

Hates

-Bling hats!!! I cannot stand pink hats, hats with jewels stuck on etc! GRRR!!!

-Seeing people riding in trainers and tracksuits

-Waiting around for hours for the farrier to turn up

-Untidy manes and tails

-Parents with no knowledge buying totally unsuitable ponies for kids after they've had a couple of lessons

hairy horses (ears, heels, covered in whiskers and beards etc)on anything except natives

dirty tack

click clack over reach boots

brightly coloured synthetic girths

people who under-rug clipped horses, incl not using an exercise sheet, grrrr.

people who ride in wellies

people who dont wash off/sponge down sweaty horses after work

You'd all be be disgusted to see me. lol. Blue's always covered in Grass/poo stains, his manes on the wrong side (it won't stay on the correct one), Herc has Black tack with no noseband. And i ride in Jeans (I really hate jods, and can never find any i like)

I hate;
People that cabbage hay bales - how hard is it to pull a layer off at a time, in fact it's easier.
People that make snipey un-nessacey comments about yard services - either have your horse on DIY or move, don't snipe constantly.
People offering to help and doing a half-hearted job, so it doesn't actually save you any time.
People who let their horses walk all over them and then wonder why said horse mis-behaves.
People un-nessecerily using gadgets on their horses.
People who get the jumps out to use and don't tidy up after themselves, tho they are repeatedly asked to.

I love;
People that love their horses, care for them well and don't give a s*** what other people think about them because they know the truth.

i dislike [ hate is a strong word]
riders who ride once in a blue moon & then complain about their horses' manners/way of going etc
badly behaved horses who put my [well behaved ] horse in danger because no-one has taught them how to behave out hacking
people who dont tidy communal spaces on a livery yard
people who seem to believe that the tea/coffee/sugar is replinished by the refreshment fairy
dressage judges [ at RC prelim level] who cant find a nice thing to say about a horse on the marking sheet

i like
hogged & clipped cobs
people who know more than me [ well thats most people] who are generous with their knowledge & experience whilst not putting anyone down
poo picking - sad but true
turnout - its a horse - they like fields:)

Like:
tidy stable area
well-looked after horse with owner who gives a *****
matching tack (my stirrups are the same make as my saddle:o)
lots of turn out for horses who can be out

Dislike:
owners who don't come up and see their horse more than once a week-what's the point of having one?
owners who don't do jabs/dentist
owners who don't pick out feet-the stones here are ridiculous:mad:
people who don't get out the vet when it's obviously needed (like the horse has a flipping hole through to the sinuses, check the air bubbles coming out of its face, you t**t!

I hate...

horse's hogged that don't have enough neck to carry it off
hogged cobs with forelock left on......looks utterly ridiculous
long unkept manes - even on M&M's - doesn't take alot to make them tidy
heavy cobs in silly, dainty bridlework
saddles fitted so far forward they are on the horse's withers
plaited tails - pulled is better
whiskers
overbent horse's and ponies
horses in showing classes with filthy white socks
long tails dragging on the ground
big bushy tails left like a mess at top
bridles without a noseband
parelli

Guilty of a few!! :D

Don't like;

- people who ride and never spend time just being, with their horse

- people who put everyone else down

Love;
- Kelly whickering at me when I walk on the yard
- long manes (brushed and unknotty of course!) same goes for tails
- horses working hard for their rider
- people wanting to learn and improve
- my horse looking a little wild! :D
- jumping; and a good confident horse who will bomb towards it!!
- that feeling of leaving your stable nice and clean
- the feeling I get when I see Kelly in the field (as said, looking a bit wild!)

I have brown tack, no bling, I use hoof oil, I keep whiskers (could never shave them) and Kelly's mane hasn't been pulled in at least 5 years ;)

I hate:

-people who kick and pull all the time
-people who constantly nag with their legs, enough to create bald spots

- overbitting and too many gadgets
-small children riding with whips, spurs and gag bits
-bitchiness on yards
