what are your pet riding hates....?

Yeah, same as!

Also, people putting too much pressure on a horse to perform (and then wonder why it "breaks" down!)/ or blaming the horse rather than looking to themselves.

And in the past- i've seen people light up a cigarette and smoke whilst riding- that looks just horrible i think!

Can't think of any more but i'm sure there must be!

Over use of the whip, or riders who don't listen to their Instructors. And those that just canter round and round, going overly fast with no aim or goal to achieve other than, going fast.

People who ride in an array of gadgets for no idea how to fit or use them correctly and no idea what they are trying to achieve with them.

People who ride around with their legs jammed forward, sitting at the back of their saddle...

People who hunch over and round their backs, ending up with their hands on the horse's neck (I hate this especially as I find myself doing it sometimes)

and people who think a successful jumping session is one where their pony jumps x inches bigger than last time, even if it knocked it down / refused half a dozen times first, then cat leapt it awkwardly. Yea, nice work, child :S

Amateur dressage riders who force an outline or put horses in a double bridle before their ready.

Funnily enough, I'd hate that from a professional rider too :D (Urg I'm such a pedant, I mean that although it's amateurs who tend to do things like that, it would be equally unacceptable from a pro... Sorry, as I say, pedantic, and doesn't dispute your point at all, just a thought...)

The suicidal pigeon that hit the side of my hat while out riding in the field :(

On a more serious note though, people having gadgets they don't need really really winds me up!!!

A few at the moment that grate on my nerves now i have moved yards;

1. the young girl who has her pony in a pelham in the school then spends all her time flapping her legs to get the pony to move .

2. The people who bought their child a horse because "they can't afford lessons", then refuse the offer of free riding lessons for said child. (perched on top of horse stirrups to short, reins near the riders ears).

Argh..... and breath.

- People who buy the wrong horse for their abilty.
- people who don't give enough time to their horse

(although both of these works to my benifit as I cant currently afford my own horse and share one which fits both of the above)

People who appear to be working significantly harder than their horse!

Cutting corners in the school and trying to rectify this by pulling the outside rein! Argh! And double Argh because they then wear an annoying grove in the school for my horse to fall down.

Unnecessary gadgets
Showjumping ponies with pelhams, martingales etc then a flappy child with a pair of spurs
Wrong horse for the riders ability
People that think by draw reins and specifically for getting their horses head "in"

But I dont tend to lose sleep over it

Definitely the flapping/nagging legs i hate watching people do it i even grind my teeth it annoys me so much!!
I really don't understand the flappy waggly legs especially in dressage what is it going to achieve i'd quite like to know ooo people who bounce in the saddle i want to steal their stirrups or people who pull their horses onto the bit using very strong contact, a snaffle and a flash i think it looks painful

People on the local riding school horses galloping towards you saying they have no brakes !!

People who overtake, but the either trot or faster take off in front of your horse, my horse is 32 but needs NO help in winding himself up and would happily gallop off behind them !

There's a woman who gallops everywhere, I time my rides to hopefully miss her as this makes my horse go nuts

Not so much riding related but my biggest pet hate is - the people who mow the field next to us every other week, never use it for anything!

People whilst out riding who wear those brightly coloured velour tracksuits with trainers, carrying a handbag without any hat it could only be in Essex, honestly I have seen this several times its not pretty.
Also hate loads of gadgets that are not necessary.

I'd like those type of people to have a go on my horse and try forcing her on to the bit she would fly buck and not many have stayed on when she does haha had a lady ride her recently who's into dressage(or would like to think she is) the horse was having none of it as the lady tried dragging her head in......the lady lasted all of about 45 seconds from getting on hehe.

uuuuwwww just thought of my biggest pet hate is when children are immediately given a whip even when they have never ridden, i was taught without a whip and actually never used one until i was 15/16 when i had a stubborn pony who didnt like certain cross country fences and then i only used it on his shoulder which was more about the noise than pain.

All but two or three of the posts are things riders who are starting out to learn are guilty of, and myself and the rest of you have probably done the bulk of them at one time or another whether we want to admit it or not :D:D:D
