What are everyone's thoughts on the horse drawn carriages that go up and down the promenade etc.?
I am from Blackpool and frequently drive up and down the prom and see them.

I will say, that I really do not agree with them, especially in 20 odd degree weather that we are currently experiencing!

I just wanted to see what other people thought, incase I was just being too soft (as usual)?!

I would feel sorry for them too, I’m also soft though!
working horses I suppose are all working in whatever weather and if that’s it’s job that’s it’s job.
Racehorses are still training and have too, eventers are still going and again have to, If a race or event is on a hot day it would be pretty bad had they never experienced training in heat.
As long as they get water and it’s sensibly done.
Im a sap though with my own!

Some people are likely to disagree with me here but it isn't THAT hot tbh. I remember showing in low 30s but more like mid to high 40s with humidity factored in back home in Canada. Just made sure that tack was removed when not ridden, lots of water and electrolytes were given, sponged/hosed appropriately, etc. If we stopped riding/working them because of the weather we wouldn't be able to ride.....+30s in the summer and -30s in the winter. Often though we would try to reserve riding for an appropriate time of day - eg first thing in the morning or in the evening when it was a bit cooler.

I’d also agree in the 20’s isn’t hot. Today we touched 30 apparently but there was a breeze so it didn’t feel awful.
I don’t ride in the late 20’s because I hate heat!!

It isn’t hot for a lot of people but I’ve become a wimp. Lived here too long.

We were in Namibia during their winter and it was still 30c. But many of the locals were in sweaters. Someone asked me why I was wearing a t-shirt and I said that it was bloody hot. They laughed at me and said, “this isn’t hot. You wouldn’t like hot.”

I would imagine if it is only in the 20s and they are properly managed, with regular breaks, access to water etc, then they should be fine. I regularly work mine when it is in the mid 30s. They are fit and up to the work, and treated appropriately. I think it depends upon the treatment and how fit they are.

There will be a breeze on the coast, I'm sure. Our 1st horse had driven on Blackpool prom. He was retired from that job aged 12 and sold to a family home. They don't work every day, are rested in winter and are kept fit and properly fed. I have no problem with it - and he was a bombproof hack!

Goodness, 20° isn't hot :D. I can see if the horses (and people) aren't used to working in the temperatures it being uncomfortable, but as long as they have water and aren't driven too hard they won't come to any harm. I used to work horses at 4am because it was 40°+ & 100% humidity in the day when I lived in the USA and the Far East.

I completely agree.
Where I live, by the sea, the summer temp only gets to 15/16!
I was just driving home from work one day, and my car said 24, and the horse and carriage behind me, you could see how tired the pony was.
It had 4 people in the carriage, a driver, and all the carriage and tack on too!

The conclusion is I'm a softie and my pony is a spoilt brat!

I don't have a problem with it really. They will surely be quite fit and it's not THAT hot is it. Providing they are given plenty of breaks and water then I think it's fine.

Yes, I suppose I don't see them getting breaks and water lol.
They just looked awfully puffed out and tired.

And its hot, but I guess we just aren't used to it!
