What are your views on keeping horses stabled 24/7?

I have done it when stabled in London many years ago but would not do it again. It is much better for the horse to have turnout for at least part of the day.

Personally i wouldnt consider it unless the horse had some issue where it couldnt be turned out...... just a personal preference but horses are not meant to be kept in 12x12 pens for 23 hours a day!

I dont think it harms them, but dont think it does them much good either.
There are plenty of reasons for 24/7,and known one who hated being out but if possable turn out should be given.

I appreciate that sometimes there are good reasons for doing this, but it is not something I would consider except for accident/illness.

Hes an exracer so proberbly is well used to being in all time but since i have had him he is out all day in winter and out 24/7 in summer so it would be a shock to the system for him

Against, simple as. Any horse of mine lives out 24/7, 365 days a year, bar any box rest needed due to injury/illness. You create many problems (stable vices, ulcers etc) by putting horses in such fake and unnatural environments.

Last year due to work my mare went from out during the day in at night to stabled 24/7, tbh she wasnt any different whatsoever.
They pretty soon adjust.

Certainly not ideal. Lots of the horses at our yard are in 24/7 and sometimes in for days at a time. I'd hate to keep mine like that, but some horses seem to cope just fine. PF lived out in the UK and is in now, although I give her several hours out every day in a small paddock (all I've got) as it does help her chill out

Unless there is illness or a just reason I wouldn't do it. When we were showing professionally we always had our ponies out at least 8 hours a day for their own sanity.

i would only consider it if a horse really really needed to be stabled, like if it was a medical reason, otherwise i would rather only keep them in on a night, most seem to hate being kept in all the time, mine is in on a night in winter, but out 24/7 during the summer, and is fine.

Not ideal. Can be done. Depends a lot on what the horse's work load is.

Personally, if you have any doubts about it, which I think you may do, I wouldn't loan to this person.

A horse is a free animal/spirit and needs to be out with friends , keeping a horse out 27/7 is fine if you have an emergency stable for injuries etc, keeping a horse in 24/7 is bad , I used to go to a riding stables that did this and the horses were all miserable as far as im concerened its imprisonment. DONT DO IT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES PLEASE, it would be better to sell the horse than to let this happen to it. just think how you would feel if your mum had kept you in your bedroom with nothing other than your bed and your friends were all out playing?

Ditto what donklet said

It's cruel

I'd never do it unless required through illness or injury, I visited a livery with no turnout apart from a pen and even then they were turned out alone, I can't get my head round how any horse could be happy with absolutely no interaction with other horses

.

I wasn't keen on the idea but didn't know whether it was me being soft as lots of people seem to do it think he can stay with me for now

Yeah people who have no idea on how to look after a horse and are only out for themselves for trophys and pretty rosettes and who dont care about it's happiness and it's mental well being.

I'm glad you have changed your mind

Sorry but, no no no.

Unless for health reasons, then I think it is cruel.

Just think about what a horse is, a roaming, grazing animal, so how can they possibly be happy being cooped up.

Glad to see you have changed your mind and saved me having to write an essay on the average dutch livery yard and what level of craziness the horses manage to reach.

Good decision

Nothing was arranged i just told them i would have to think about it i thought he might go nutty and start crib biting again

I agree I bought an imported DWB who had never been turned out, he was a loon the minute he was ridden on grass. Thankfully after many months of turnout he calmed down.

I hate the idea of a horse being cooped up inside 24/7. I do know some horses who would be in all the time if they had the choice because they are big softies who like being pampered (

), but if you say he crib bites then I'm assuming he is not one of those horses.

I agree with the majority on here its cruel unless health dictates ( ie box rest )
and well done welshmonster good decision, you would have felt so guilty if you had let your horse go to this yard

You've done the right thing. Can't think of anything more hideous than a horse being cooped up 24/7 unless for health reasons. And yes before anyone jumps on me, I know some horses adapt, but to my mind that doesn't mane it right.

After you have slapped a saddle on their back and ride them round, i think the 'au naturel' argument rather goes out the window.

Provided the horse is acclimatised to it and cared for well, excersised appropriately and kept occupied, i dont see the harm. Its not for me, but i certainly wont lambast others for doing it.
