I was looking through some horses for sale today and I came across a advert with a horse jumping a hedge. "Looks quiet nice" I thought. Started reading the advert it said it was a 2 year old and it was backed

. What are your views on this?

i have seen things like this before. i hate it! yes racehorses are broken and raced at 2 sometimes but it doesnt nesserserily mean its correct. i think its wrong, why cant people just let the poor horses develop first?? my mare was raced as a 2year old and in result now has a rotated pelvis, causes no problems to her at all but still it could have been prevented if it wasnt becuase of some greedy trainers. thats only my opinion though

Ohhh, are you on about in h&h magazine? I read it this morning at college and thought whattt?! And then read the advert properly... Bay, 2yo, kwpn etc etc...that did not match the pic of a grey horse on the left

Are you on about that advert?

Personally dont like it!
I have a 2yr old (3 in may) and he is no where near ready to be backed.
He has done basic ground work as he is so big i wanted to make sure the manners were there but thats plenty

Ok, so now its just in general, what do you think about horses being backed at two years old ?

I dpnt agree, why cant they be ' kids' for a while, what is the rush

I saw one two year old being ridden and in foal, i complained to the web site and was removed. Riding two year olds is just cruel. We have a pony on loan that was ridden at two and he has quite a few health problems as a result.

Actually it depends on the degree of 'ridden' and whether 2 is just 2 or rising 3, there is a difference.. My youngsters are long reined, sat on and walked about at 2-3yrs, it hasn't hurt them and better that I start them nicely at my own pace, then they have the basics and life is going to be easier for them.

I can find a half dozen started and ridden away 2 y.o horses at any time on my local sales pages.

If the horse is mature enough, and it isn't doing too much I actually think it has it's merits.
