Currently doing a bit of online shopping for winter clothes for the yard and was wondering what everyone's 'must-haves' are. I'm a poor college student so need to be relatively cheap! Especially on the look out for a cheap-ish padded gilet without a hood

Fleece lined waterproof chaps! And my musto ear warmer.

Also got a got a cheap gilet from new look in the sale last year for £10.... Then splashed out on a sherper lined musto one for £90.. Whoops!

I will watch the thread with interest as I need some winter clothes... Just one question, why an ear warmer rather than a good old fashioned honest to goodness hat?

If I am mucking out or doing something strenuous I get too hot in a hat. I usually start off in a hat, then switch to earwarmers, then go back to my hat!

i get all my stuff from go outdoors. base layers and microfleeces really cheap ,gillets ,thermal socks, padded jackets ,woolly hats ,waterproof trousers ,neck warmers you name it they sell it! none is horsey named stuff but all very warm and very cheap !

Personally it would be because I can wear my hair up in a ponytail in an earwarmer- can't do that in a hat.

skiing trousers, not too thick!! they are better than any waterproof trousers! can get them pretty cheap in TK Maxx too! and some decent gloves, but about 8 pairs coz I always lose them! defo need to invest in some soon as I can't find last years! haha and a hat that covers my ears

Some kind of over trousers. It's amazing how much warmer my whole body is when I wear mine
I mostly wear fleece lined waterproof chaps as you can ride in them and i find i bend easier too

For me the chaos come before a hat or thermals. Mostly cos easier to take off than thermals when you get too warm
Good gloves come next

For me the essentials are ski trousers, cheap, waterproof and warm. The must have expensive item is my seal skinz gloves, cost about £50 but worth their weight in gold several times over - I actually had dry and warm hands for the first time ever last winter

Thermals thermals thermals! Get layered up.oo and a nice furry deer stalker hat, think that's what they're called, you know the hat with the ear flaps. Picked up one from matalan mens bit, furry inside, waterproof on the out. Ideal.

Waterproof trousers, sallopettes for worse weather.
Woollen bobble hat, waterproof hat, trapper hat for even worse weather.
Ski socks
HKM thermal boots
Mark todd winter gloves
Neck warmer
thermal leggings for under jods/waterproofs
thermal base layers
Workmans hi viz long jacket
I hate being cold! dressed correctly I am fine though.

I live in my quilted overalls, or ski pants and down jacket, or a heavy farm jacket.

Always a neck warmer thingy and something on my head. I have doe skin gloves that I wear over cheapo woolly gloves - I buy those by the dozen :)

Thickish cold weather socks and rigger boots.

I am not a pretty sight, but as it is only me and the animals, who cares? :D Everybody around here dresses the same in winter.

Also, fortunately, the house is 50' from the barn, if I want to go in and warm up I do, nothing worse than being frozen and having nowhere warm to go.

Ah sorry, you said you don't like hats, how about those hair bands with ear bits attached. Sometimes earmuffs dig in, or fall off, especially when engaging in a bit of rigorous mucking out or bending over to make feeds up.

Earwarmer headbands. I have 4 and I live in them in winter - cosy ears without hat hair!
Good gloves - I bought a pair of Sealskinz waterproof riding gloves (the all weather ones, not the winter ones) last year, and they're ace.
Body warmer - I have a fleece lined Joules one and a down filled Toggi one, both are great.

Fleeces by the dozen and a very large waterproof jacket so the colder it gets the more layers of fleece you can get under it I hate being either too stuffed up or too cold so I can adjust the layers as needed, Top layer is only used if it is raining which is a rare occurrence here, Having said that it has been raining for the past 48 hours so x country tomorrow has been replaced by dressage as pony is barefoot and I would say the grass tomorrow will be like an ice rink

Layers, trapper hat and my sealskinz gloves are invaluable!! Got them off eBay for much cheaper than rrp and they're hi viz ;) can't lose them!! Plus my down ski coat that I've had for 10 years from a charity shop, warm as toast lol

I avoid horsey brands, look elsewhere (high street and supermarkets are doing good value gillets, fleeces, thermals and waxed jackets atm, outdoors retailers, ebay) and I buy during the summer sales.

MY essentials include my bargain Campri padded ski-jacket (£10 in summer sale now on third winter), padded/reversible hi-viz ALDI gillet brought 2012 (£15 I think), Dunlop wellies (£10 - worn with fleece wellie liners) and cheap lined mucker boots (from high street store, ebay), Belstane hi-viz fleece lined riding jacket (£25 inc. postage summer bargain) and I supplement them with cheap polar fleece jumpers from Decathlon (£7 each), fleece cardies (£7 from Tesco/Asda) and layer up jods or wear thermal leggings or tights under. My only pricey item is my Shire's long coat which I paid full price for but it does the job and I can use it all year round :).

My seriously thick fluffy wool socks with a thinner pair underneath, my daft pigtailed hat that may make me look like a plonker but it's really warm llama wool, my new deerhunter jacket (courtesy of the lovely OH who took pity on me with my non-waterproof jacket :D), layered t-shirt, long sleeved t-shirt and jumper, tights (never liked wearing them but what a difference in body temp!) under johds, waterproof trousers, a buff or two for round my neck (brilliant things!), and my sealskinz gloves :D

Splashed out on Muckboots last year and don't regret it. The neoprene lined ones. For winter riding my long Drizabone riding coat plus thermals top to toe, and essential ear covering under -hat silky balaclava. Good gloves.

I couldn't have survive last winter without my ski socks.

Ski jacket was the best to keep me dry and warm and not too heavy as well (a bargain from ebay, as didn't need anything fancy to muck stables).

Lined cragghoppers trousers are a blessing, use them to walk dogs too!

But the ski socks were a must, I practically lived in them all winter( I have a few pairs though) :D

Ski pants and a workmans high viz jacket from either makro or Wickes.

The ski pants are a godsend whether it is wet or cold or both and I have no idea how I managed before I got them. The High Viz workmans jacket may not be stylish in any way shape or form but MY GOODNESS they are the warmest and most waterproof coats I have ever had. Forget spending almost £600 on an all singing all dancing super duper goretex fleece lined megacoat a few years back....the wormans high viz jackets are under £20 and beat everything else hands down. Only thing I will say about them is it is worth replacing the zip for a better one as the ones they come with tend to break. I don't care though...my current one has seen me through 2 winters and still looks new. :-)
