What Attracted You to Horses in the First Place?

There are old photos of me about 2 years old being a horse...with plastic beakers for hooves:o

My mums side of the family is not horsey at all....my dads side were farmers and back in the day my dad used to look after and ride the plough horses. Maybe thats where it came from...I cannot explain it - it just is.:)

Good old fashioned blackmail!!! I was an obnoxious horrible child who was forever in trouble at school, my dad turned round and said "what can I do to make you behave?" my response was "get me riding lessons", he did and the rest is history (I was 9). I spent every waking hour at the RS and was too tired to misbehave after that! Didn't get my first pony til I was 21 (and I still have him!)

I was 3 and just finished ballet lessons for the summer. The teacher told my mum that I would be able to start ballet exams in September and had a list of things I should try and stay away from doing, one of which was horse riding. When it got to September and my first ballet lesson of the new term I said to Mum, "Mum I want to go horse riding instead." The rest is history! :D

Now I understand doing ballet can help strengthen your core etc. so should have stuck at both!

I have no idea, I've thought about it a few times and can't come up with a reason why I got into horses. None of my family are in the slightest bit horsey despite being descended from 400+ years of farmers and farm workers, who lived and worked on farms with plough horses and/or a pony to pull the trap.

I started asking for a pony as soon as I was old enough to ask for one, my parents wouldn't have anything to do with the idea, wouldn't even let me go riding.

At some point in time we lived in a house where there was a riding school that was within walking distance of our house and my pocket money would cover the cost of a lesson once a week, so since they didn't have to go to any extra effort I was allowed to start going riding...

I have no idea either. I was born in love with horses. My Mum had owned a few horses before my brother and I were born, but that was it. I think my parents finally gave in to me having riding lessons as they couldn't bear the screams from the back of the car of "PLLLEEEEEASE STOP THE CAR!!!!" (as soon as I could speak) every time we drove past a field of horses, so I could get out and stroke them through the fence! And it went from there.

no idea! My mum rode for a few years before giving up when she found out she was pregnant with me, she didn't ride again till I got my first horse!

I remember saying I wanted lessons but I don't remember what made me want to take them up in the first place

My Dad got into horses in his 50s, so he encourage myself and my sister to ride - I was taught to ride on the village pony at the age of 11, and then had endless lessons for years - until at the age of 15 I was given my first horse, a crazy mare who was the best horse I have ever sat on. I hunted her, did xc and hacked for hours and hours bareback. Then I discovered boys and fell out of horses. Apart from the odd riding holiday over the years I didn't get back into horses until 5 years ago, when I wanted to get fit for my wedding (gyms bore me) - ended up sharing a horse and then buying my own. I am just as obsessed as I was as a teenager, but no where near as brave!

I skivved off school age 12 and went with my friend to see her pony. Had a little ride bareback and from that moment on I was destined to be ££poor££ :D

Ride on friends pony when I was little, then relatives pony when I was about 16. But parents would never let me ride inbetween, so grew up got job and paid for my own. However, I do know my dad used to ride one, although he's never actually told me himself, I have my spies - just a shame he wont bin off the shooting and go hunting instead!

Can't remember. Just loved them for as long as I can remember. Mum was always bemused as family are not at all horsey :rolleyes:

When I was about six/seven I used to dream that the ottoman at the bottom of my bed would turn into a horse overnight. Still have the ottoman, it never did turn into a horse lol.

Got out of horses for a good few years, did things like rock climbing, white water canoeing, winter mountaineering instead, but then when D1 started having lessons at about six years old, slowly got back into it all. Bought a pony for D1 when she was eleven or twelve, then bought a pony for D2 six months later, then a horse for me a few months after that. Never really looked back :D

My mum booked me a lesson when I was 3. And that was that! I'm now 19 and have an NVQ in horse care, work as a self employed groom and have had several different horses over the last few years. Current one I'm hoping to get to lots of shows this season!

It seems like I have been around horses since before I can remember and I think I was around horses quite a bit but I only acctually got into riding horses when I was seven-ish. My sister was having lessons and one day I just plucked up the courage to ask her instructer (I remember asking her in the quietest voice ever - I was a very shy child and barely spoke!) if I could have lessons too - obviously asked parents first and mum said I could ask. And as they say, the rest is history. I did loads around horses whenever I could, most of which I realise now was just us slogging away all day every weekend for a 10 min trot around - but it was worth it! I loaned and shared a few ponies and horses but they were usually not for long, we did meet some very unusual people in the horse world but some equally lovely ponies! Age 13ish I think I properly loaned my first pony and we had a whirl of a time before he was sold on. And then two years ago I met my horse of a lifetime, an ex pointer. That was the steepest learning curve I have ever experienced and he became my best friend. Devestatingly, he passed away in unfortunate circumstances late last year and I have been horseless since because I miss him so much and can't bring myself to get back into them yet. I know it will happen, but since he passed away, everything just seems to have fallen apart a bit and since I have to rely on my parents to afford a new one, I think I would rather wait till I can get a job and afford my own but you never know - I am a strong believer in fate and you just never know whats around the next corner.

i rode a few times on holiday i think and then started at a riding school when i was 6 i think, mum and dad thought it would only be a faze, 10 years later im still riding (still horseless as well :( )
at work the other day a girl had her first ride on one of our ponies and her mum was going to ring their local riding school when they got home :) and i honestly hope she gains as much from horses as i have/am/will :)
