I'm so disapointed my horse who is starting to do well has been kicked by her 'companion' luckily i was there when it happened as it hit a vein and there was blood everywhere within minutes it was like a fountain! blood all over the field all over th yard. I'm so glad i'm so well prepared with my first aid kit loads of gamgee vet wrap everything the first bandage didnt stop the blood it came straight through but the second one did and then i called the vet. I was shocked though as quite a few people said they didnt have a first aid kit another said they did but didnt know where and one said they werent even registered with a vet yet as they only just got there horse! Cant believe how unprepared people are, is it just people on my yard?
She has staples in, on box rest for two weeks and just have to hope the staples hold for the next few days as the bandage has to come off tonight as its going to swell and i have to bandage myself but not too tight! Just as they were starting to stay out as well!

Oh poor you, my horse cut her leg badly recently to but its all healed now, 2 weeks will fly by. Bet its put years on you seeing all that blood squirting out, think i would have promptly had a heart attack.

I think alot of people don't have a comprehensive first aid kit, they seem to think that calling the vet out is enough. Even if a vet comes straight out for us it can be 30 minutes or so.There's alot that can be done in that time prior to the arrival of a vet & those initial actions are extremely important. I have a first aid kit in a large plastic tool chest. It's readily available & it always travels with my horse when he goes out in the trailer. It's the first thing into the car when we load.

I hope your horse heals quickly.

I have a big first aid box for the horse, but have only had to use it on the farriers apprentice, when he managed to rasp his finger!!!! Sent him home with his finger wrapped in purple vet wrap!!!

I'm hoping it will go quickly, and hopefully she wont lose too much fitness! I'm so glad i have a huge first aid kit! Glad i'm not the only one, it did take the vet about half an hour luckily i had stopped the blood by the time he got here but in that half an hour she would of lost hell of a lot if i hadnt done anything apparently they can lose then pints without too much bother but i think in half an hour she would of lost alot more than that the way it was coming out. I've only really used my first aid kit for me in the past always covered in vet wrap! Thanks everyone!

You definitely need a comprehensive kit - one of my mares last year had a horrible accident and nicked an artery, had we not had piles of gamgee etc (and a very speedy vet) then I don't think the outcome would have been quite so good.....
