My mare has had her shoes off since November, and I would like to go without shoes permanently.

I have ridden her a few times but she is sore going down the stoney driveway, she's not too sure about the road but is fine in the field.

So I though I would give boots a go, but I dont know which ones to try. Have you used any and what would you recommend?

A friend of mine uses Boa boots and they have lasted a long long time. Apparently they are easier to put on than the others with a wire.

My mare is recovering from a pedal bone injury and the Boa boots have been great. They are really easy to take on and off. I shall not put shoes back on her, she is nearly sound and this one set of boots has been used every day for nearly a year. They are still in good condition.

I second the Boa boots

I had my mares shoes taken off at the end of November too as her hoofs were in such a bad state. Her hoofs are so much better now but she is also still sore when we go out. I looked into a lot of the boots and I decided on the Old Mac G2's and they seem to be really good. When I first got them I was totally confused on how to put them on but now it only takes a couple of seconds. She wears them on her fronts but I might get her a pair for the back too as they are not hardening up as the weather is so wet. I try and keep her on the fields if poss when we go hacking and more often than not I jump off coming home, I don't want to do too much too soon. Good luck going naked!!

Ditto the boas, they are great boots and they look like little horse trainers too

I wish I could get flashing lights in my mares ones, she'd love that, lol

Thanks. Its really hard not having a shop locally with them in so that I can go and look at them all before I order a pair. And I need to get out and about soon because I will be making a mess of the field if I have to keep riding it in

I use Old Macs. My first pair were the original design, but shortly afterwards they brought out the G2s which I now have for all round, although I'm not using them atm as the ground is soft and her feet have come on so well. I may need them again in the summer when the ground gets harder.

Old Macs were recommended to me by my Equine Podiatrist. They are easy to put on and take off, and they stay on well when riding. It's important to get the right size though. Measurements are on their website and on the box.

I use Old Macs but I've never used them long-term; just when my mare was un-shod during 'maternity leave'! They never caused us any problems, no rubbing or falling off or anything - I was very pleased with them.

Would 110% recommend G2s, they are the best for traction on the market. Reports on Boas tend to say that they are pretty lethal on wet grass or mud.

I currently use G2s all round on some hacks with my mare (sometimes she goes barefoot) and after a year of using them in all situations including jumping, I would not hesitate to recommend them to anyone.
