my friend has been looking for a 14.2hh for a while and cannot find anything suitable under 3 or 4k and then some ! i have started looking on the internet on her behalf as i have seen all the posts on here saying what bargains are about and how cheap ! i was confident there would be hundreds of bargains ! however all ponies seem expensive and very few and far between . ( unless welsh or 12.hh ) . all the so called bargains are horses around 16 hands and many tb , there seems hundreds of those ! and not all cheap. she just wants a pony ! just to ride ! nothing amazing just a normal pony --- so where have they all gone ? years ago they were everywhere , are people only breeding horses these days ?

Does she just want a '14.2hh pony' or a '14.2hh pony that is safe to hack in traffic, in company and alone, good to jump, sensible at rallies and out hunting, good in all ways, not too old and not too young, with no health problems or quirks at all'? Because if it is the latter, they are always in high demand and prices tend to stay quite high.

no . just a " normal " pony. no hunting , shows or rallies ! just the sort of pony that used to be around plenty, bedraggled in a field and ridden at weekends . not a coloured cob or haffy either:rolleyes:

they are a very popular size as adults and children can ride them easily so that puts the price up a bit :( but they are out there (I got one in the summer :D for under 2k aswell and he is proving to be a very nice pony) but she may have to put some work in to make it what she wans it to be the majority of bargins when I was looking had a few quirks or had been out of work so if she is willing to take a bit of a gamble and work through any issues she may be able to find a bargin

thank you everybody for your replies and links . by the coloured cobs or haffys remark ---- its just that everywhere you look these days there are a million coloured cobs ( not so much haffys ) they seem to have taken over ! and these seem to be the main choice you have for ponies described as " sane ". ( or is it just the way i see it ? ).

They never hang round for long. I have a 5yo 14.1hh for sale ;) but she's quite a slight mare (though at her age might grow bit) and feels more like 14hh to ride. My young gelding is the same height as her on a stick and feels double ;)

I have just bought a 148cms, but more like a full up 14.1hh, 11 yr old arab x connie mare, very, VERY pretty, nice to handle, ex JA. I paid a few hundred quid for her. I did buy her out of work after she weaned this years foal. And she did a tendon 3 yrs ago so will never be asked to go back to 1m20 tracks. Shes been proven sound for general teenage hooning around inc jumping up to a metre on a dodgy surface, even when in foal. I had to text the old owner and ask which tendon it was as there is no visible sign of the tendon issue. Shes bombproof safe for even the most novice rider. She was happily hacking out alone in the summer with a 10yr old girl who could barely rise to the trot.

If it wasnt for the previous tendon issue she'd have been mega bucks and if I was unscrupulous I have no doubt I could flog her for mega bucks. Even taking all the above into account, if I HAD to sell her I'd be looking at 3k for her. She would be the last oe of mine to go though as she is such a pleasure to have around. You cant put a price in a safe, nice, easy to handle, pretty pony and that is what everyone is currently looking for.

The bargains are the ones with issues of some sort or another, whether that is being young, or having quirks etc
