having tried various options i woudl say stick to shavings/wood pellets/those sorts of beddings if using a full rubber bed.
If using straw i found the best thing was just to have rubber where you dont have straw ie the front of the stable
I use free shavings from the timber yard (thanks to a brilliant Dad who gets them for me). I put just as much shavings on the rubber as I used to. A good tip is that if your stable is rectangular shaped put the bedding in the 'short side' of the stable. This way you will use less shavings but be able to have a slightly deeper bed. I pulled up my rubber matting last three years ago and I nver pull it up now unles shavings have got down the side.
Megazorb. everyone on my yard with mats is now on it. Just put a layer where your horse wees.
Found straw disgusting, not absorbant at all so my horse ended up covered and the stabled stank with wee coming out the front, not nice. Have tried shavings, didn't find them absorbant enough. Easibed worked well, but found it worked out more expensive than Megazorb.
I too prefer megazorb - soaks up pee better than anything. It is the only bedding that copes with our very piddly clydie mare.
I use a bed of about 3" deep over the back half of the stable which means they are kept dry and don't have wet rugs. I leave it to set and skip out poo and take the wet area out once a week or so.
No smell etc by doing this.
I have used shavings mixed with megazorb as well but found just megazorb the easiest to skip out.
Aubiose...used to use shavings but they got so expensive this was almost same price so gave it a try. Its better and more cost effective. I only use a half bed but a deepish half bed.
Wood pellets - same absorbency - if not better - than Megazorb - but way, way cheaper. Also smells great and rots down fast, and doesn't get kicked around as much as Megazorb.
These are the cheapest I have found to date - only £1.60 for a 10 Kg bag. Unbeatable I think!
Our whole yard is on a full flax bed. I think its megazorb? They used to be on shredded cardboard which was nice too but the deep littered flax works out cheaper in the long run
Straw with mats just at the front and a nice deep bed at the back
Though one of my boys is now going on shavings because he got colic last night we think from eating too much of his bed
