What bit do you all use for hacking?

Dutch gag x 2 with French link mouthpiece. Main ring for schooling, down one to hack. NF and part NF - tendency to leave if insufficient bitting. Nice and polite at all times in the gag.

Curved single jointed copper snaffle x 1

Plastic ‘kind’ type bit x 2

Tom Thumb x 1 (v strong cob who doesn’t even notice anything else we have tried, is ridden on loose reins mostly but has to have this mouthpiece or when the child does need brakes there are none!).

Eggbutt French link x 1

None of the above have a nutcracker action. All are the individual pony’s preferred option from what we tried.

Loose ring french link for everything, have tried different bits in the past but always go back to this. He goes well in it and I can stop if needed!

Umm - I have no comment on bitting or any other sensible things - but what on EARTH is that hat cover? 😆 Is it a Highland cow?!
Oh God, yes. I don't even see it now. I am numb to the silly look!

It was way back, when he said he'd have a go at sitting on a horse. He could not understand why I wanted him to have a riding hat when he was just going to have a little sit and walk round, but we went off to the tack shop, despite him swearing that any old secondhand one off Facebook Marketplace would do...

The Highland Cow cover was what sold the idea of a good, new, safe hat to him, so the Highland Cow hat cover it was!!!

It even surprised the horses at first!

At least it didn't turn out to be only one sit!

Cheap and cheerful shires 2 ring single joint sweet iron gag. He did have a NS universal but it snapped and I didn’t really want to spend the money on another when it’s very rare we need the full gag action etc. This works just fine, it’s a bit chunkier but he doesn’t seem offended.
