What bit do you mouth your youngsters in?

I ride my horses as far as possible in a loose ring french link with a peanut link. It's a long time since I last had a youngster, but that's what she wore from mouthing right through her ridden career.

I now have a Sec C colt who will be learning about bits soon - he has very briefly had a straight bar in-hand bit in his mouth, more to gauge size than anything else. It was far too big, so I need to buy him a new one. Straight bar, or straight into a french link?

Pros and cons? Any ideas welcome. Thanks :)

I mouth all mine in a french link D ring.

No risk of pinching and the D gives clear signals for exaggerated turn aids at the start. I also like loose ring full cheek bits but they are well nigh impossible to get round here.

Mine have a happy mouth with a lozenge initially, but they show in hand with a Cambridge snaffle.

Ridden they have a NS with cheeks, then a loose ring
