what bit is recommended for this?

A bit that encourages mouthing, and suited for a horse that leans occasionally and can get quite strong when excited out in company (hunting fun rides etc)..but is great to school and hack, but leans when bored etc and just plays with the bit.

A Wilkie Snaffle with the loops in the bit rings, preferably a lozenge or french link mouthpiece. A sweet iron/copper mouthpiece is good help encouraging mouthing.

Id say a waterford. I used to ride my horse in a snaffle but he used to get strong in company etc. I tried other bits, gag/pelham etc and then swapped to a waterford and its great. Its a mild bit so perfect for schooling/jumping etc but then when they lean because its all jointed they cant pull against it.

Wilkies or waterfords?

I have seen wilkies in happy mouth and Neue Schule do one, they use a high copper content.

mine mouths his tom thumb - he leans all the time and the lower shank just lets you lift them slightly

I mainly use with 2 reins so the difference can be appreciated.

Spons Rides etc I give in and just use single rein on lower shank

mine is a cob cross and very heavy

I used a waterford on my leany horse and it made him a bit more mouthy as well as stopping the leaning but its not a severe bit : )

I'd say a loose ring french link or any loose ring snaffle. It might also be worth trying a little tip my trainer gave me for my mare because she used to lean. Once you have put his bridle on give him one or two sugar lumps. Also, when schooling, if he starts to lean give him another.

I know you won't want to give too much sugar but I only had to do it for a few sessions, I now use sugar free polos

i would suggest a french link as i was bringing a 6 year old back into work after a bad accident and the vet suggested this bit but then again this horse wasnt mouthing or leaning against the bit it was just really excitable. sorry if this hasnt helped
