Hi everyone,

I have an event next Saturday and need to get a new breastplate for jumping as my other one decided to snap today while riding! I usually use a five point breastplate but my local tack shop has this one in and I’m wondering if people have ever used these kind of ones where they are 3 point but don’t include the neck strap?

I feel like it looks very tidy, and doesn’t restrict movement as much, or is as heavy as a five point one is, but it also doesn’t look as secure or something 🙈 just wondering people’s thoughts? I could always buy and try for the week - my tack shop doesn’t mind this with bridle work.

To be honest once your saddle fits, and your girth is well adjusted - the breastplate is just extra security that can help if something goes wrong! Probably isn’t as secure as five points with girth straps - particularly if your saddle was to go askew after a bit of trouble but I don’t see anything wrong with the above. I agree it looks neat and not too bulky. It’s probably not to far off from a normal martingale and neck strap with the bonus of the d ring clip attachment - plus the removable martingale is very handy!

I personally don't like them as if they do kick in, I think it puts a lot of strain on the d rings and creates a pivot point on the front of the saddle. I always prefer ones that go on the girth.

I don't like the ones which clip to the D's but thats personal preference. I prefer one which goes to girth straps and has a smooth piece over the top of the neck (if that makes sense!) as it can still be grabbed a la martingale in an emergency. Or a simple racing breastgirth with a sheepskin over it

I can't see the photo very well on the phone but think that's a v check. All breastplates affect the horse's movement pattern, I'd suggest looking at the Fairfax one. It's expensive but is designed not to interfere with the movement half as much (and I'm not a lover of Fairfax generally!).
