What breed can you not imagine owning?

For me, I could not imagine owning a small, white, fluffy dog, such as a Maltese or a Bichon. They just don't seem funloving enough (not to mention the frilly aspect).

Speaking as a novice dog owner, Border Collies, Springers, Pits, Cane Corsos, and even Chihuahuas, would be out.

Any very large breed - not practical to take with you everywhere and don't like large cars either ! + short life span .
Staff or rottie either as there is so much paranoia about them in this country that it's making their owners life miserable.
Nothing like a 'Stella" or a "Rio" !

I dont like terriers or toy dogs.


I like big dogs, just like with horses, dont like anything that isnt strong and sturdy.

I cant ever imagine having a small dog, although I must say I do really like bulldogs!

Gah!

My small, white fluffy clause did not extend to Westies or JRTs. I'm thinking more along the lines of a Maltese, a Bichon, or a toy poodle.

Those white fluffy things are daft as are the chihuahas that get carried about like they have no damn legs....although it's the owners I object to really!

Also wouldn't have anything bred to be deformed as standard like a bulldog or dachshound

a fair few!!!! but toy dogs are particularly frightening as I would be paranoid of hurting them or stepping on them! Would have another Wolfhound and dare say whole pack of them again if I owned half of Scotland!

A Cavalier King Charles Spaniel - my mum and sister both breed and show, so I have been overdosed with them from age 11 onwards

Nothing with a long coat - not because I dislike them but I wouldn't have the time needed to groom and care for their coats and if I had one I would want it to look pristine all the time. My dogs get filthy but they are so low maintainance - basically when the mud dries it drops off! Although Daisy did roll in what smelt suspiciously like fox poo yesterday and then had to be bathed because she smelt so bad!
I wouldn't say I really disliked any breed - I've seen good and bad examples of most breeds and different types and personalities suit different people. The only dog I personally would never have is a Shar Pei and probably nothing that is either extremely big or extremely small either. Someone I worked with used to have Italian Greyhounds and although they were beautiful dogs I was always paranoid I'd inadvertantly stand on one of them.

I couldn't imagine owning anything huge for practical reasons.

I don't like tiny designer dogs for fear of squasing them and because they don't seem like proper dogs - although they might be if they grew up in a normal environment instead of a handbag.

I like active dogs so anything with conformation that affected its ability to go on long walks, do agility and other fun stuff would be a no no.

Oh and no slobber - yuck.

I don't have the inclination for lots of brushing of long coats.

OK, so I do have a hairy dog, but I kind of inherited him and Evie does his grooming, Thank God for Oster rakes is all I can say!

Ann-Jen - you disappoint me! Long coated dogs are beautiful. I have two rough collies and thankfully the coats don't take that long to groom. The dirt also falls off them once they are dry - the drying is the hard part. They certainly keep me cosy when we are cuddled up on the sofa!!!

I wouldn't have anything that resembled a rat, slobbered or had half it's hair off. Quite a few of them around where I live and I could happily stand on the them (only joking - I think). There is one that yelps it's head off it you look at it.

Sorry Maral - I do think they are beautiful (when I was young I always had a hankering for an Afghan Hound) but given my lifestyle I just wouldn't have time to do their coats justice. When I got my first job I nearly took one of my mum's cockers as my first dog as she was so faithful to me but as I was working on farms most of the time she would of been knee deep in cow muck most of the time - my mum kept all the dogs including all the oldies in pristine show condition all the time - I think she would of been horrified! I really loved that dog and I think I broke her heart when I got Bracken my first Vizsla but they are so much easier to keep looking tidy (ie require no effort at all

)

Not keen on terriers, ever since my husband brought one home, I just can't warm to it. Anything that is selectively deaf and yaps a lot.

If I was buying my first dog with the knowledge I have now, it would be a gundog, preferably a working cocker or a small lab.

Totally agree with your second point!! dogs are so boring if they just sit there doing nothing all day!!

I'd rather them be brats than boring!

Don't rely on working bred labs being small. OH's fox red is 22 kg at 7 months, and you can just see his ribs - not an ounce of fat. Also has HUGE paws and lots of growing room in his skin. He also ended up losing weight just before OH got him, as he ate some paper and got blocked up (that's how OH met him). Given size of mum, he should have been small!

Also likes rolling in fox poo!
