I bought my horse Rocky last year and was told that he was a Welsh x Arab but they weren't 100% sure :s. I have tried to contact the guy who first registered Rocky as there is hardly any info on his passport inc his DOB. The guy never replied and I've had no luck with tracing him.

I know there are loads of people that want to trace their horses and if I don't find out what Rocky is then it's not a problem but thought I would make this my last attempt to see what people think he might be and even if they recognised him at all. Long shot I know but thank you for reading. :o

I'm not sure how this works as it's my first forum but I do have pics in my 'Rocky' gallery.

He looks like a Welsh x (possibly section D x something) to me. :D How big is he?

PS, welcome to the forum! :)

Definately looks like a majority of native breed in there- agree with Faracat that Welsh seems a definate possibility as stocky and has quite a lot of bone. Doesn't look very arab-ish at all but if only a small majority of him is this may not have come through :)

Hey!! Thank you guys. I agree that he looks very Welshy. The only araby thing he does is put his tail very high when he trots sometimes and he floats! He is 14.3hh :)

Ive had welsh cobs and welsh cobs x welsh ponies which move alot like arabs, their tail carriage is very high. to me he looks majority cob though could be a crossed with something simular.

i have a dartmoor crossed with a welsh, shes mostly dartmoor but anyone who didnt know would swear she was welsh through and through.

Yes your right, Welsh's do move alot like arabs. He does sometimes look quite cobby and then other time he looks quite fine and has quite a high trotting action.

I guess some of them can look more like one breed than the other like you dartmoor x :)

he could quite possibly be 2 types of welsh crossed giving not only the cobby appearance but the smooth, floaty movement. on the otherhand ive had cobs crossed with various other breeds, all with minour amounts of cob in them. e.g. 10% cob and they look like purebred welshies.

you may never know exactly what he is, though i would guess at mostly a welsh cob.

Thank you, I think you could be right.

I feel much more confident at what he could be and although will probably never know exactly what he is I do feel much happier listening to other peoples opinions on him

I'd agree with mostly Welsh. They all trot and carry their tails high! I might add a dash of New Forest to the mix though...but not much just a tablespoon!!

Isn't that a welsh thing too? Seeing as they have arabian blood lines in them originally they do have arabish traits. Saying that, my mare is TB x Friesian and her tail can sometimes be vertical if the mood takes her!! :D:D

Agree about the Welsh/Arab thing, it's the araby bit in the middle that makes welshy's special. lol.

Yes there is alot of arab influence in the welsh breeding and the same with TB's as my old TB did the same but I also wondered if he did it because he was on a yard with arabs :D

Your right Gilbey, he could have a dash of NF in him :)

Here's an ArabxWelsh for comparision..... I can see it not only in his high tail carriage, but also high head, and he has very Arab features, small muzzle, etc. His sire was pure bred Arab.
From looking at your guy I don't see so much Arab in there to be honest, but as others have said, Arab blood has been used in the Welshies.

TBH I never thought he had arab in him when I bought him as I couldn't see it myself when they said but wanted something with Welsh in it and he looked quite Welshy. My friends actually got a Section D and someone went up to her and said 'what a lovely arab!'

He's lovely but the only arab in there would be ancestral bloodlines from time immemorial when arab stallions were left roaming the moors to 'improve' the type (as many breeds have been).

High tail carriage is something all horses do to certain extent but you don't see 'purebred' big cob types doing this as they have not taken much oriental influence and lots of the european crosses don't do it neither. Some tb's have it depending on breeding but not many.

That snorting vertical tail thing is a warning and display which lots of horses do when excited or scared regardless of whether they have any arab in them or not.

I'd say more welshie. He's a beautiful boy though. My mares meant to be a 3/4 Arab and 1/4 welsh C. But she looks very Araby since she has the weird proportions, the tail and a very Arab dished face. She is also very hot headed and spooky haha. He might have a tiny bit of Arab...maybe part Arab grandparents but whatever he is, he's gorgeous! Just my type of pony haha

Ah, thank you for your kind comments about him. He is my baby (quite literally acts like a baby) :)

There may be a tiny bit of arab somewhere in there as quite a few horses have a bit arab in them.

the smaller Welsh's have really dished faces don't they so you can see so much of the arab.

lol, Rocky is quite hot headed too and can be really stubborn and try his luck but once he knows he can't get away with anything he's brilliant. Your mare sounds lovely thereaper :D

I reckon he IS welsh!

I've had a welsh D and she was more arab than some arabs I've seen... She couldn't float anymore as she was an old and poorly girl, but you could tell she had it in her!

A welsh D on my yard is another "more arab than an arab" looking welsh - interestingly has the same breeding as mine!

Some people just forget that actually some horses have features of other breeds, others add breeds to make up for missing breeding.

I went to see a friesian X years ago. If that think wasn't 100% fells or dales I'll eat my hat. However, someone pointed out fresians, fells and dales have common ancestors, so not entirely untrue to call him a friesian X!

Ah bless her heart. It's funny isn't it how much of the characteristics some of them have.

Thats very true what you say about breeding actually and I'd never thought about that. They are starting to do the same with dogs now to get the true breeds back.

I always thought dales and fell's looked like mini friesians. such beautiful horses. It's mad to think how many breeds there are out there. When I first met my bf he thought all horses looked the same (he had much to learn) but 5 years on really appreciates how unique they all are and their different purposes :)

He looks alot like my lad:

Hes welsh x and apparently 1/4 arab, but we're not sure if thats 100% right.

Definately alot of welsh in there, whatever he is he is very pretty! :)
