Hi all just wondering what breed you would say my project boy is?

He is an Irish import and just has a generic passport.

I was hoping to do some dressage with him and also some showing but im a complete showing numpty and would have no idea what classes to enter him in? Any ideas? :):)

do you think he has a little bit of fjord horse in him? he looks alot like my friends old horse who was a fjord X cob.

Whatever he is hes very cute, gorgeous face.

Must be fjord cross with something with that colouring and dorsal stripe, although ardennes did come to my mind when I saw him too! He's lovely whatever he is!

I have two duns, the first is a fjord/haffy cross holstien, and a haff x friesian. I have spent the last year and a half telling people that mine are not highlands, I will try and upload some photos.

Thank you everyone :-) I am biased but I do think he's gorgeous

Serenity he's 15.2 and built like a brick outhouse, although I did have to rescue him from the field today as a 12 hand pony was knocking 10 bells out of him haha

Some great suggestions, I really haven't a clue, I better do some research I think

Defo got some Norwegian Fjord in him. His marking are perfect for the breed and his head shape looks just like the fjords at my yard. I think his shape is more native, so like a highland or something like that? I pure bred fjord would have shorter legs and a longer back i think???

Nice looking ponio though :)

What came to mind for me - with that Dorsal Stripe was Exmoor X, Fjiord Cross or Ardennes Cross.

We had Percheron Cross at th eschool in NZ with the same colouring and conformation.

Just turned on the tv and saw a horse the spitting image of him but didn't catch the breeding :-( suppose I should look at some breed standards and see what characteristics he shares. Had lots of people on the yard say fjord or highland, hadnt thougt of ardennes thats a good one.
Any ideas re showing him?

Fany is an Ardennes (Trait Ardennais) see photo below. She is full blood, your lad looks a little on the light side, but could depend on age. Breed characteristics are very gentle, even tempered, kind and hard working but they are stubborn and can be bolshy throwing their weight around if not handled properly. Hard hooves, feathers are wiry not silky. Large nostrils, but small ears. They stand between 14-2hh and 15-2hh ( higher for males only, mares to 14-3hh)
Your boy looks like an Ardennes but I think he is maybe a cross. When crossed they often look very much like the Ardennes side. A friend had an Ardennes x Shetland (no idea how!) but it looked exactly like a mini Ardennes.

Unless he has an Cheval De Trait Ardennes society passport he won't be allowed into their shows, they are very keen to keep the breed pure and don't have a part bred part of their breed registration. I would show him as a cob, he is beautiful and looks like a nice middle weight.

Anything else you want to know about Ardennes if you decide he might be one let me know.

FDC- thank you :-) lots of great information. I do think he is a cross just not sure what with. He moves like a dream, puts my warmbloods to shame so will probably do more dressage with him. Just wondering if I would get away with doing some cob classes at local shows ?

Your horse is gorgeous, what do you do with her?

I think he would make a great cob for showing, from what I can see. He is unusual and very nice looking. What about ridden hunter if he jumps?

At present watch her eat! My daughter and I are both quite poorly at present so she is having a very lazy year, along with our other horse, Captain. She was bought as a hack and is probably the most bombproof horse ever, she has had strimmers start up on the other side of the hedge, out of sight and she hasn't batted an eyelid. Angle grinders, pheasants, low flying aircraft nothing scares her. I thought maybe she was deaf, but no, just very laid back. She is an ex-show horse, I have researched her background (we've had her 2 yrs) and found her breeding lines are excellent, with lots of champions in her immediate family. She herself has won a few championships in Belguim, then became a brood mare. Now a hack, she was only backed 2 years ago.

Thanks for the compliment, she is rather pretty and does show that you don't have to be a WB or one of the more blood breeds to be good looking.

He is so handsome what ever he is!, please keep us posted with more pics and updates, good luck with him, will you be planning to keep him?

My 1970s (bought recently out of curiosity) breed book suggests that connemara's were 'originally dun with dorsal stripe and black points'. Apparently greys (and blacks, browns and bays) are more recent. This chap looks /way/ lighter than the Ardennes I've ridden/seen driven on the continent so I'd say he was more likely an (old-school-)Connie x. I know a Connie x TB who has the same (forgive me here, I actually like both horses and the dog breed!) dachshund look. So, I'll go with connie x ISH or similar as he is a little heavier than the connie x TB.

Love to see some progress pictures later.

PS the ConniexTB I know is lovely, confident, bossy and loves jumping.
have fun with your chap whatever he is/likes to do!
