What breed for disabled boy? And also, rescues?!

The lady I babysit for is looking to get a dog for her disabled son. She doesn't want a puppy, she wants it to be quite active but NOT manic. She basically wants my dog - lab, happy to be active but also happy to be asleep on the sofa. But I believe that that isn't the case for most labs?!?

Also, could you please give me the names of dog rescues in Gloucestershire? Thanks in advance xxxx
 
We had 2 labs and were as you described ... active while walking but happy to lie about all day, we've just recently got a cocker and she is much more active and needs walked alot more than the labs!

I would definately recommend a lab
 
Golden retriever? I'm not entirely sure about this but I just had a thought that you could look at pups that were bred as guide dogs but didn't quite make the grade? They are bred with temperament in mind
then again it depends on why they didn't make grade I suppose! but might be worth asking :)
 
when I mean pups by the time they're out of their foster puppy homes they're about 12 or 18 months... so not quite a puppy!
 
why not try an older staffie bitch? as these dogs are so people focused and just want to be with "their" people as much as poss. They like their exercise but will lie around in between - mine would normally go out twice a day and then sleep in between. My sisters young staffie bitch will up the anti for her walk mates, and then go and play with the 3 year old next door - calmly and no bouncing..
 
We had a black flatcoat retriever. He was 7 (an ex-shooting dog) when we had him and he was the most affectionate dog I've had - and I've had many different breeds. All he wanted was to sit as close to you as possible and be made a fuss of, which would be ideal for a disabled person. You should ring the kennel club for tel. nos. of breed rescue organizations.
 
A greyhound? they are lovely dogs, very quiet and gentle. some of them are more boisterous, others are more laid back, but none of them need hours of exersize and they seem to be quite happy to rest a lot.
