So I'm looking at getting a dog next year but am stuck with what type to get! Can anyone recommend me a breed/crossbreed that might suit? My problem is I'm asking a lot...

What I want:
A small dog
That can go running with me a lot
But will still sit still in the office whilst I'm working
Be soft to stroke (ie no curly coats)
But more workmanlike than not
No genetic disfigurements (short muzzles/sloping backs etc)
And finally relatively easy to train!

Previous dogs include spaniels (far too mental), collie x lab (love but too big) and JRTs (not cuddly enough). If no perfect breed I might just go and get a rescue staffy even though they're ugly.

Cheers:)

Bedlington, He is gorgeous, a real cuddle monster in the house, undemanding and easy to look after, non shedding, a lovely soft as wool coat. Ok he needs trimming, but can be trimmed in a working trim with a standard pair of clippers or as a show trim. I trim Flodden about every 6 weeks to keep him as a show trim. I brush him every couple of days. He has endless energy outside, loves running with me. Will happily join in with everything. Has required little training, just does what he is told :) He will run all day, or sleep all day depending on what you want. no clothing required for him and he has been totally non destructive. I also have a whippet, she will fulfill most of your requirements, only issue I have is that she loves to cuddle up, but she has pointy bits :)

Hmm, the problem with getting a whippet is that I look a bit like a whippet and I don't want to be one of those people who look like their dogs...

Border terriers- maybe
Bedlington terriers/ schnauzer- I don't like their faces sorry:(
Great Dane... you know I would but they are short lived aren't they?
Lancashire heeler- awwww cute but legs are too short :(

So yeah any other suggestions... maybe there's some obscure breed from Tibet that would suit...

I second a beagle. They are bred to run around all day long, and are so sweet and loveable but not too annoyingly attached. Youd be very happy with one - i always loved it if one was in work.

Fully admit there are some ugly staffords around but there are also some very pretty ones too..honestly! My red boy is very doe eyed and people assume he must be a bitch. Little whirly white pup has a really pretty face too...they are out there!

I agree there's some very cute staffords about. My lurcher is a staffy x greyhound though, so I maybe a bit biased.
