Hello,

Just would like your opinions on what breed he is. He's 7 years old.

That short cannon bone screams Irish Draught, there's Connie too but also a good lot of cob. If you don't mind me saying - as I AM Irish, I can say this - lots of Irish horses are a bit "Heinz 57". Which is a good thing! I think ID, Connemara and a good dash of Irish cob - I know Irish Cob isn't actually a breed, but as I think he's a bit of a mish-mash, best to describe him by type rather than just breed? He is lovely!

Thanks people.

He's supposed to be an purebred Irish Draught BUT I've seen pictures of R.I.D's and his legs don't look right. Interesting to hear what other people think - he's supposed to have green Irish papers but his owner hasn't actually showed me a copy of them yet. (He's on loan) If he does have Irish papers could he still be a cross with something?

CompetitionDiva - From the picture you linked to his legs do look remarkably like the percheron.

Is it likely that he is a full Irish Draught or could he be crossed with something?

Thanks for all your replies - you've all been very helpful - its very interesting to hear what other people think.

Bit of connie? :)

Edit: whoops post replied straight after looking at pics, didnt she was 17hh! :o And didnt see that she was full ID. I dont think she looks full ID :p

Thanks LadyRascasse - I see what you mean, he does look remarkably like a Highland. Is it possible he could have highland somewhere in his genes?

Does anyone know (this might a thick question) but do Irish Draughts have feathers? I only ask as he has fairly thick feathers which are black for some strange reason..he also has a brown spotty ear and a brown patch on his cheek.

ETA: He's 17hh +, measured him this morning but he didn't stand still long enough so he could be taller. I don't honestly think he is full ID but I could be wrong.

He is a lovely boy! RIDs usually carry fairly light feather. Your boy's hind legs are the mystery to me as everything else checks out ID. Just for fun I have put a link to a picture of one of the very old traditional Irish Draught horses called It's The Quiet Man, very heavey bone and a good exam-le of the traditional type so you can play pick and mix :)
