what breed is my horse?

hi i finaly got my 1st horse last september the add said and the person i got him off he was a welsh X never belived that just loved the look of him. all the people i've asked said he's some kind of trotting horse vet/dentist/farrier and people on farm etc all the main things we know about him part from his history colourful it is thats his a import from france thats it...
he got a real nice trot 1 of the best i've seen most people i've seen when i've benn on him like him love his trot but no1 knows what he is... love to find out its been bugging my head so much.

I don't think the head reminds me of either TB or Welsh , it's a little strong for that so I, personally, would rule out a cross, but who knows .He is a smart chap so don't worry about it. Enjoy.
 
I think he looks like a Selle Francais a French sport horse - and the characteristics are:

Selle Français are supple, strong, with good bone. They are powerful movers, fast, bold, and very trainable. The Selle Français stud book covers a wide range of types. The horses used for sport, especially in show jumping are the most famous, but they are also used for racing , eventing and dressage. Lastly, the non-specialist horses are used for leisure and riding schools.

The horses usually stand 16-16.2 hands high,but can be up to 17 hands high. They are usually bay and chestnut but sometimes roans .

If you Google - pics of this breed look very like your horse. He is lovely by the way!

Doesn't look Selle-Francais to me... Would agree with standard bred!

However, owning my own selle francais, all the facts you have are wrong!

He is 17.2hh and a skewbald (all be in the brown patches are roany)

Looks a lot like a standardbred mare on my yard, especially the face. She's a very nice mare but does struggle to trot rather than pace. I don't know what the norm is with standardbreds is though :)

Lovely horse anyway :)
 
My Selle Francais is a big 17.2hh gangly chestnut dude who has a very pretty, slightly dished head. I guess he was fast enough, trainable enough but most certainly could never have been used in a riding school - not got the right temprament. They need to update their description :D

You could say the horse in question was a Selle Francais but that covers such a broad spectrum you may as well call it a mongrol. But I would say it defo had trotter blood in it.
 
Looks a bit like mine, trotter cross, no Welsh, in the first picture he is being held in too much and is overbent behind the crest, typical result of tight side reins while lunging.
French trotters who have been raced in harness will have learned to pace, but as you do not mention this, I assume he has normal trot, most french trotters are 16.00hh, but English trotter can be gypsy bred or bred in Wales by harness racers, they will be smaller and less TB type than the French ones, but obviously there can be quite a bit of variation.
Standardbred is often used as a general term for horses of this type, Standarbred harness racing occurs in the US, most are smaller than French Trotters and are raced over sharp dirt tracks.

He's what ever breed it says in the passport, if you don't know his parent's breeds you aren't going to know his and no about of pictures or guesses can tell you the breed.


Someone once asked me if my horse was full Arab, in fairness he was titting about a field at this point... he's a 100% registered DNA tested at birth TB!!
 
He is the spitting image of one of my liveries, which is Welsh x Standardbred, and used to be a trotting horse.

He's very handsome!

TBF Darco's passport says he is a BROWN COB TYPE... Er she's black.. And I would say a Cob Type isn't a breed.. Course it depends when the passport was obtained, Darco is 7 but only been passported since Nov so... Guess work!
