I own an approximately 19 year old 14.1hh gelding.

When I rescued him, I was told he was purebred arabian, but he has no papers.

I am not so sure that he is pure, so would like opinions on his breeding please, as I'd like to do some local showing with him this year.

Heres pics

Thank you!

I agree with the others I'm afraid, as he doesn't have the arab ears (which tend to be very pointy and slightly inward facing) nostrils (which would be flared in the moving shot) or the very high tail carriage (which you would also see in the moving shot

) and most part breds exhibit at least one of these characteristics.

If I had to guess I would say Welsh, possibly a Welsh B x C or B x D (I think his carriage is lighter than a straight bred C or D but he is too big to be a pure B)

Whatever he is, he is gorgeous

I am going to disagree

I think people are seeing the welsh in the first 2 pics as he is quite 'chunky' and looks to be holding a lot of weight on his bottom, though not in the last pic.

I would say, although less so when moving. in the last pic his back end looks very araby, and poss his shoulder.
His feathering is very un araby! so something in there.

his head is quite plain, which is partly why I am not seeing the welsh in him, most welshes have a bit of dish to them too. Mine doesnt much but his parentage has and if he could I still dont think he would produce a head like on yours.

We have a welshxtb x arab. who head is really quite fine.

So whats the other bit... I am not sure really but welsh just doesnt scream out at me. I do think he could be pure arab but perhaps with slightly interesting breeding but its those feathers that I cant place

I was going to say welsh until I saw the last photo! I would agree with the others-although he deffo has some Arab in him (you can get quite chunky Arabs depending on how they are bred) its those little feathers that give him away that hes not a purebred! Arab/Welsh crosses are quite popular I think

I have to disagree with Alison as I think he does have Arab ears, not as pronounced as some of the Egyptians but if you look at other types of Arabs then there are some definite similarities. And as for the tail-that depends completely on temperament, we had a number of show colt/fillies we had to show that just would not "show off" and stick their tail in the air-it obviously was not exciting enough for them!

I'm struggling a little bit for decent pics, as he has mild sweetitch, so has a rug on in most of my pics!!!!

as he looks araby but atypically arab I have been nosing at some of our mares pedigree, she is racing lines, which look very different to you typical pictures.

If you are interested scroll down at some of the stallions.

'concord' I think looks very throroughbreddy!

and both Jiyush and pogojii, (my mares dad) do have some featherage. (it is a rubbish pic of him though, he looks much better on his stud card

)
The wiking also has feathers.

so my plump is that he is pure bred arab. but not showing lines.

this is my friends welsh x arab mare. She has papers so we know that is what she is. She is welsh x crabbet arab, 14hh and 6 years old in these pics.

Hmmm...after looking at the first pics I would've said Welsh D x Arab but after looking at the second set I would say NF x Arab.. or even DxNF X Arab.... :P

Hee hee! That's what I thought after the 2nd set of piccies. New Forest x Welsh D x Arab!!

Don't know if you're still checking back on this but i would say he could be pure crabbet. My share is full crabbet and actually has quite a lot of feather at the moment, it's ridiculous. They also have 'plainer' heads, more typical of original arabs with a lot less dish. Although your lad does have even less dish than my lad and his half sister (also crabbet).
This is his sister, age 26

And the lad:

You can see some feather on that pic, but he has been living out the last few weeks in the snow and now has as much feather as a welshy! It's really really thick, it's crazy! But he's definitely about 98% crabbet

If i was forced to pick something your lad could be crossed with i would go with NF rather than welsh.

Looks very, very welsh D to me. I've had a welsh D x Arab who was almost identical (but a darker colour).

Some breeding stallion arabs can be stockier, but as he isn't a breeding stallion, he looks very welsh D.
