What breed is this dog, and best place to buy a pup?

Where would you recommend getting a puppy from, apart from rescue centres, or from someone you know? Its for my parents, not me-we lost our old dog earlier this year and we still really miss him, and just having a dog around.

My dad was thinking of buying mum a Westie, but I'm not sure about the breed. Just done a search on here and they sound quite yappy, and like they have a lot of health problems-is this true?

Our last dog was a jack russell X, and we're not sure what he was crossed with; originally we thought it was border terrier, but it could have been anything? After he died, we searched for ages trying to find out exactly what breeding he had. Our only regret with him was that we didn't buy one of his brothers too, as he was such a star. Sadly he went suddenly blind about 3 years ago, and then developed cancer at the start of this year and went rapidly downhill. Looking at his photos has just made me get really upset again.

Any idea what he could have been crossed with? And any websites worth looking at to try and find something similar to him?

Thanks

If you are looking for a breeder, go and visit them a few times and try to meet both parents if possible, get a sense of how the puppies are going to start their lives (eg will they be in a house, getting used to all the normal sights, sounds and smells from the start?) Are the parents well balanced, friendly, sociable? Make sure the parents have any health checks needed and that they are clear, and check how many litters they breed a year and steer clear of any that have loads of litters every year.

When we got Barney we went to see loads of breeders before we found Mrs Satterthwaite, I think my parents started with a list from the Kennel Club although this is a long time ago now!

I also remember my parents getting the third degree from Mrs S, I would look on this as a good sign as it shows the breeder cares where their pups are going.

Westies can be yappy, or really nice, but they are very genetically predilected for a lot of health problems!

Your old dog looks like a big rough coated JRT only! lol maybe fox terrier, not sure what else really.........

cutie though!

Id say rescue centre as well though!

We'll definitely go and view the parents, and steer clear of puppy farms! Having bought a kitten years and years ago from some slightly odd people who had a house full (literally) of cats and kittens, and then it promptly catching cat flu, never again.

I rarely see pups at rescue centres, otherwise they would be a great place to try. My parents are quite fussy and I know theres certain breeds they wouldn't take on, they quite specifically want a terrier X like Charlie or a Westie. Hope they go off the idea of westies though

Believe me plenty of rescue have puppies in.....take a look at the "I really want a dog post" competitiondiva has posted an RSPCA link, I spied a few puppies on there.

LOL! He now presents himself to be dressed when I say "Pookie Joules!"

He looks just like our old boy and he was a rough coated JRT through and through.
Daft little dogs aren't they?

Arhhh, love the Joules jacket!! They do look similar, Charlie had more of a compact body and nose though. Maybe he was just a long haired JRT then. We always thought he was too cheap to be a purebred-my uncle bought him for us at a horse show in devon as a pup for £50.

This is my favourite photo of him, before he lost his sight. Please excuse the sight of my dad in the background with his shirt unbuttoned, I have no idea why he was walking along a public footpath like that!

I think you lad looks like a rough coated JRT, no cross there at all. Recently there seem to be quite a lot of "mini" JRs about but they weren't meant to be so small. They were bred to flush foxes as well as deal with rats don't forget.
With regard to where to look for a dog, sadly there often a lot of JRTs or JR type in rescue so they would be a good place to start. If you go to a breeder bear in mind the tendency to call any small terriers with white marking JRTs and make sure you see at least the mother, and preferably the father so you know what you are getting. And also the KC reg Parson Jack Russell are different again, a lot longer in the leg so may not be what you are looking for. Good luck with the search.

He is super gorgeous! Just like Pookie who brings a smile to my face every time I see him!

JRTs are very popular so you should be able to have your pick locally. We found Pookie through an advert at the local pet store.

To me, he looks just like the rough-coated JRT at our local dog park.

He was such a lovely boy! Great smile. Out of curiosity, did he go blind from PRA?

He went blind from something called SARDS (Sudden acquired retinal degeneration syndrome). It can happen to any breed of dog, very suddenly, we'd never heard of it until he suddenly developed it.

He did actually cope remarkably well with it, but it was still distressing for us to know he could no longer see us. It was just very unfortunate, and then getting cancer a couple of years later at the age of 10, he was put to sleep in March, a few days after I found out my horse had awful tendon damage-it was just the worst week I've ever known.

I don't know if getting a new dog will help to ease our loss, as we still really miss him, and my mum still gets upset over him. But at the same time it would be nice to have a dog around again.

Thank you for the replies everyone.
