What breed/s do you own and do they live up to their stereotypes?

Re threads below, question as in title.

I bought a shetland as my kids first pony. Stereotyped as nasty little buggers not suitable for kids. (one old bag locally keeps telling me "shetlands aren't kids ponies, you shouldnt have brought him").

In the first few months he was an angel. Then we had problems, he turned into devil pony, now he's back to his old self. He works on the bit, can be hacked off LR by complete novices, and is handled by small children. Yet he's fun and fast.

I have A clysdale x, I think some people may just assume he is a big chunky thing good a hacking. Actually he is an amazing jumping machine, well schooled and a bit of a devil to hack!

Quarter Horses - yes each and every one of my QH's live up to their stereotype.

Appaloosas - ditto as above

Paints - ditto as above

Connemara - ditto as above

Canadian - ditto as above

Arab - ditto as above

All of my horses live up to their breed traits - possibly because they are all very very well bred horses with very long breed lineage.

two welsh cobs

the six year old lives pretty much up to his stereotype (most of the time)

and

my lovely stunning coloured mare is a complete loony who i cant believe i brought when i was such a novice. she rears, spooks, spins, bucks, naps you name it she does it.
typical women, tempermental

Harry is a welsh section D. Yes, he absalutely deffinately lives up to the welsh D stereotype!
Tara is a TB, and again is very stereotypical of a fast TB who can be a little...flighty...at times

PB Arab (more Arab % 77.3) 4 years old, quite laid back and friendly, a bit spooky out but not much. Typical? I don't know.

Anglo Arab, friendly, absolute plod in the school, needs strong legs to get into trot. laid back and slow really! Looks around when out but is more or less the same, a plod! Not typical.
New Forest mare, very friendly, brilliant all rounder but obstinate (if you take a wrong turn, she tells you!
Other Newfie, very sharp, can nip, either likes you or loathes you, fast pony. Not a real novice ride.

Welsh A. Sharp, keen, pacy, shy but sweet. Typical I think of a welshy.

I have 2 Tb exracehorses who are 4 and 5.

My gelding is a typical TB, doesnt like the cold, has every allergy going, constantly hurts himself but at the same time he is clever, willing and loves to work. I'll happily put up with the bad bits to have a horse with his work ethic.

My mare did race however I think they made a mistake as she is so un-TB like its not true! She is a bit slow on the uptake, totally laid back, doesnt like being in and winters out fine with one rug and some hay.

They are chalk and cheese but I wouldnt swap either of them for the world.

My previous horses have all been pretty much typical of the breed - highland was strong and opinionated but willing at the same time with a wicked sense of humour. My Connie X was athletic and could jump the moon, just not that bright! My welshie was the best horse i'll ever sit on, but at the same time he was tricky and sensitive and I woudnt have another one.

Pip is a hackney,TB,welsh mix, and i expect i lives up to it, i recon he should come with a warning, 'Fizzyness of Hackney mixed with spirit ofwelsh and speed of TB should not be mixed', but he is amazing when he goes well.
Ginga is 1/8th arab, rest welsh and he is nervous at times but reliable and very strong, not particularly typical!
Ajay the shetland is typical, full of attitude but lovable. And teddy the welsh A is very quite, almost opposite to most of his breed!

Missy ISH .... so far , shes living up to her breed ... shes 3/4tb and 1/4 ID ... she can be quite highly strung and times but can be so relaxed at times .

Tommy section A ... cheeky ?? ... nope , smart yes , Fab jump yes , great with kids yes .
So with tommy sterotypical section a then my answer would be no .

I have a full arab, and he definately isn't a typical one! He is laid back, bombproof, and will jump a 3ft course and do a nice prelim test. Although he can get a bit wound up on funrides and on fast rides and use his neck to get away from you.

Jerry is a trakehner. I'm not really sure if there is a stereotype for them??! He is very calm and good natured and he is quite intelligent -most of the time, although not always very rational. I mean why can you be scared of a drain cover yet combine harvesters and huge milk tankers are not a problem?!

One shetland cross, very naughty, very typical.
One connemara cob sort of thing, not too bright but absolutely dependable, so yes, pretty typical.
And one elderly Welshman, who probably has Section A written all through him like Brighton Rock. Obviously the prettiest, cleverest, most important pony in the universe.

1 bavarian warmblood, who doesn't know he is one!!
When OH rode him first time, he said "does this know it's a WB"
He is extremely quiet and laid back, much to my delight.
So possibly not your typical WB
A bit empty headed sometimes, so maybe lives up to his stereotype a bit

Welsh sec B - kind, intelligent, child-friendly, wonderful paces but unlike the other Welsh breeds, a poofty little thing that couldn't survive a bloomin' week unaided if abandoned out on the hills! A perfect kid's pony though!

Sort of Fell x thing - intelligent, hardy, sure-footed as a mountain goat, loads of stamina & immensely strong, both physically & in her character. Could survive quite easily if turned out to roam the wild, open spaces & would probably become feral in about a fortnight! lol

Both are typical of their breed or type I would say, in temperament & abilities & are quite typical of any associated breed stereotypes!

Mmmm, Welsh B - the finer of the welshies crossed way back with arabs to refine the breed then crossed back out..... mine is an angel to hack but an ar*s to school, jump or anything else. Friendly and beautiful and lovable but takes the mick constantly out of anyone smaller than him, wouldn't call him a kids pony by any means

Newfie is typical, very clever, very quick learner and very obstinate when feels like it, can be affectionate but also nips if you don't keep an eye out, jumps like a stag from a standstill and can live off 2nd hand fresh air without the calories - LOL

Yes, they all do.

APHA, QH, Arab all completely typical of their breed stereotypes.

Fergus well, most of his awkward, stubborn, bloody minded, mulishness haflinger is cancelled out by the QH in him. He has haffy days but he has more QH days.

Mine is a Welsh Sec D x TB. I think she lives up to the steriotype. She is spooky and strong like a welsh and is sharp and gets herself wound up in a tizz like a TB. Lookswise she is a mixture, she has long TB legs, a muscular body like a welsh (but not as heavy) and she has gorgeous bit wide apart welsh eyes. She is a bit of a supermodel TBH

Loves everyone and being around people!

Well i've got an German WB who is sweet, quiet but a little dim, he hasn't proved to be stubborn yet (he's a baby and only had him since April so that could change!).

Also got a 3/4 ID and she is intelligent, crafty and strong, she's also a bit of a wimp! Think they are more mare characteristics though!!!

errm arab x welsh is stubborn, opinionated, temperamental, flighty, strong, very highly strung, but the biggest wimp in the world, in a light shower she goes completely pathetic and can hardly walk because she shakes so much, no matter how many rugs she has on!

American Paint x WB...err not really sure what is typical of these?? He's the most laid back, lazy horse in the world, yet constantly up to mischief and a complete show off! Has to be everywhere you are and completely in the way

Beano is a Section D and definitely has the Welsh sense of humour
grin.gif
Toff is only half Section D but is very strong willed with a massive personality (also a chestnut mare so makes up for the half that isn't Welsh with that!!)

Han is IDxTB and although is more or less 50:50, her temperment is more like the TB in that once she goes up she does not come back down very easily. But I would say she is a kind and gentle horse with lots of strength and ability, which is a stereotype of the IDxTB mix.

Grace is WBxTB and does not have the lazy side of the WB to her at all, she is more the TB as she is pretty hot tempered when ridden but with all the flashiness of the WB. However, she does not have the stubborn nature that they seem to get branded as.

solo is a typical TB- cant stand cold, complete wuss, absolute pillock to ride most of the time........... but then hes 100% to do anything on the ground with, i.e box, shoe, clip, etc- my youngest brother (14 and not horsy at all) can bring him in and feed him.

red is a hackney x- dont really know anything about hackneys, but hes FAN-bloody-TASTIC!
