Hi,
We've always had dogs while I was growing up and as I graduate from uni and go full-time pro I am planning to get my first puppy of my own. I want to make sure that I get the right breed. So I've written a list of things I'm looking for and any feedback/advice/suggestions would be really helpful!!

1) short hair
2) doesn't slobber/drool
3) I have 15 acres and will be outside most of the day so exercising is not a problem
4) we have another dog so won't be alone
5) we have horses and chickens so don't want a dog that will chase or harrass the other animals
6) a dog that won't be violent with other dogs, animals or children
7) must be affectionate n like cuddles and kisses!!

I am not fussed about size or colour but don't want a massive dog or one that looks really dirty really easily!

Any comments much appreciated! Many thanks

After owning 2, i would always recommend a Boxer now. Superb dogs. They have a lovely short coat, neither of mine have had any problems drooling or slobbering. Love the outdoors. My current Boxer Lucy lives with my Weimaraner and is out on the yard the majority of the day. She gets on well with the horses and has a nice friendly disposition. She is so friendly and is more likely to lick you to death!!LOL!! She loves to sit on your legs and give you a big cuddle. Heres a couple of photos of her:

I couldn't say no to that little smudge face!! LOL!!

Good luck in your search, you will be spoilt for choice with the number of breeds out there!!

I've already posted on Ridgebacks but also have Rotties. They are extremely good dogs despite their bad press. If you bring them up the right way you won't have a problem. My 14 month old bitch still tries to get on my knee for a cuddle but only half fits on now!!! We have just got her brother who is now 4 months old and a dog. Not quite so cuddly but still a pleasure to have in the household. You would need to check the parents hipscores as they can be prone to hip displacia. As with any breed be careful you buy from a reputable breeder. We were actually interviewed by the breeder before they let us buy a dog from them!!

I have always had terriers, but got a black lab bitch last yr, she is just over 1 now, and has been the most obedient, well mannered dog I have ever had. My partners parents bred her on the farm, so she gets to see her mum, dad & brother regulary. She comes out with the horse when riding on the roads and never has to go on a lead, comes running with me also. In fact I have only put her on a lead a handfull of times. She is just the easiest and best dog ever. Plus she gets on with my terrier too.

I love my Boston Terrier to death. Essentially, they have the same personality as Boxers, but are a lot smaller (15-25lbs). Great with kids, dogs, cats, strangers, they are known for being a family dog, for their high intelligence, kissing tendencies, acting 50lbs heavier than they are, being the best fetchers on the planet, and keeping you amused with their great sense of humour. There's no end to their talents. Mine comes running with me, shopping with me (this is NY, after all

), and to agility classes. They rarely bark and don't shed much either.

Here's my girl, Stella:

Boxers are just wonderful dogs. I would love one.

Why not go down to the PDSA and see what they have though??

I have a boxer, a lab and a lurcher. The lab is way the easiest, totally trustworthy. The boxer is wilful and slightly mad, he is called Spike but is usually called Psycho. Lurcher can never be trusted not to run off.

Rescue greyhound? It's a bit of a myth that they all chase livestock (although some obviously do!) and a greyhound ticks every box on your wish list. Or go to the rescue centre and pick up a dog that really needs a lovely sounding home like yours.

That pic is adorable!! I've always had a soft spot for ridgebacks

the Boxer pics are seriously cute as are the Boston Terrier ones (love the batman top!) - never heard of a boston terrier before. Def seem to be the kind of dog I'd like so thanks

I hadn't thought about labs for some reason... but sound lovely n kind dogs.
Decisions decisions! I'll have to go to some breeders and see what I think when I meet them in person.
Will also visit the local rescue centre n see what's there n will investigate rehoming greyhounds as would love nothing more than to give one a 'new' life.
Thanks for all your comments!

get a lab

am biased....

mine is lovely. He is only 5 months old - has been house trained pretty much from when we first brought him home. he is a real sweetie and loves learning.

I reckon either get a rescue and give it a new life or get a well bred pedigree dog from an experienced breeder that has done all the health checks etc.

I've loved Ridgies since the moment I saw one.... I still can't believe I have one - but TBH I would never get another breed!!

And I'm sure the feeling would be mutual. Lucy is gorgeous!

Stell-a likes to get stuck in with the big dogs

One of her best friends is a Samoyed and she gets lost in all his fur when they play together. So cute.

Here are my 2 dogs, both rescue dogs. I can definately reconmend getting a rescue dog. My friend has several rescue greyhounds and the are georgeous, spend all day asleep on the couch apart from their walks and mad sessions in the garden.

This is Millie and her chicken, she's a cross breed, possibly Australin Kelpi cross.

And Gizmo my long haired Jack Russell.

There a whole range of cross breed and pure breed dogs is rescues. In fact there are starting to be more and more of the pure breeds, so what ever breed your after, chance are there are some in recue look for a good home!!

(how tiny was he!!!)

i would say a LAB would be brilliant, we (my family and i) bought a lab when i was 5 yrs old, and he is lovely, soooo gental kind natured, gets on with anything- i have chickens and cats and he doesn't blink a eye lash (in away the chickens are more dominant than he is lol), they get on with other dogs, got short hair don't drible, they are just FAB!
