We're thinking about getting a puppy but have no idea where to start about deciding on a breed. Obviously I want something that's active enough to take to the yard with me, but is easy to train and not too mental! We don't want a big dog - we all like terrier types. Both my parents hate noisy, yappy dogs so something quiet and cuddly would be fab! Friends have recommended border terriers but I didn't think they were very affectionate? Any ideas?

We've got an 18wk old Border Terrier and he is the most affectionate little thing ever ! , he's very clever and quick to teach and only yaps when he's having a hooley round the garden! he never barks when someone comes to the door or if he sees other dogs ect which is what we wanted and he just loves anyone , very friendly , we got him at 11 wks and he was practically house trained , get one, their lovely

We have a JRT who is a total poppet! He is cute and cuddle, but also bossy and yappy! We also have two German Spitzes which, despite looking like lap dogs, love going on hacks with the horses and getting dirty!

well i got adult j/r bitch and a male border terrier and 6 little juniors!! my dogs only bark if someone startles them in the garden. both are very active when out but also love to settle for cuddles. would recommend either j/r or b/t.

Border Terrier - no contest.

Our lad is 10 in October, and although the stubborn terrier streak asserts itself from time to time, he is affectionate, loyal and loving. OK, lets you know when there's something not to his liking outside, but shuts up on command.

Wouldn't have any other breed.......

Borders are great and mine only barks when she is trying to savage (in play) our Doberman - poor boy he has the Border hanging off his jowls and tolerates it!

They can be wanderers tho, so watch them, they can disappear sneakily.

But great ratters, we had a rat that got into the house (UGH!!!!!) and was in the dogs feed swing bin (it gets worse doesnt it, it was awful!) and I flipped the lid open and dangled the BT in, one furious shake and no more Mr Ratty - instant karma.
