What breed would you suggest, and what sex?

Ok, so I've had Millie for about 9/10 months now, and she's a little star. however i've started thinking about getting another doglet, Millie loves company, and i think she'd really like to have another dog around to play with. I'm not planning on doing anything immediately, mainly because i want to have Millie spayed before i bring another dog into the house (so she can 'recover' on her own). this should be done in the next month or so. But i was wondering if there were any breeds you think would be good to go with her?

I really would like a whippet or whippet type, and i would definitely consider a rescue dog of this type as it would be ideal to have something older than Millie (who's coming up for 1 year old next month), i think my house is probably too small for a Grayhound (although stand to be corrected if they can manage in a 2 up 2 down type house with an extension down stairs making it a 2 up 3 down - plus a sizable garden), but would still consider a gray x or lurcher type - do you think they would be suitable? i do also have a cat, which would mean the dog would need to be cat friendly (or cat uninterested).

Also what sex, i've heard a dog would be better than a bitch if i already have a bitch??

any advice/help gratefully received!

Gratuitous photo op of Millie pup!

Greyhounds are brilliant to have and don't take up as much room as some think. I have mine in a flat. No garden.

Not a problem at all. He sleeps all day and runs like a loon when we take him out. perfect.

Oh and cat friendly.

Of course your house isnt too small for a greyhound! They sleep 23 hours a day :p
I have a greyhound in a groundfloor 2 bed flat lol :D

Eta - He also shares the flat with a cat and house rabbit! Perfect dog :)

Thanks all, interesting to hear about greyhounds and size of house - although when i really started to look (and fall in love with) the greyhounds on a local rescue website - it dawned on me that my biggest problem would be the car - its not a hatchback - not sure i'd feel comfortable with a big grey on the back seat? Millie has a harness and sits either on the passenger seat in the front or on the back seats, i'd need something i could do that with ideally.

FF yes, i've been on greyhound gap - thought he was beautiful - but i think i'm looking for something a bit older than Millie rather than the same age - to be the calming influence (if possible)- not sure i could cope with too yearlings in the house!! he is absolutely gorgeous though!

Your dog looks like a little terrier ? A word of warning about getting a greyhound, you might find a large lurcher or greyhound will course your little dog. I am NOT suggesting they will kill it, but I always have whippets and my sister had a large lurcher and she used to get a bit over excited and rough about chasing them, to the point that they refused to leave my side if we went for a walk with Auntie Indie. I know other people with greyhounds and the same thing happens. Running dogs love to run fast and show off their speed. Buy a whippet by all means, or a small lurcher, but think twice about a large running dog with a small terrier. Dog or Bitch is your preference, I only like bitches.

I have two bitches, a whippet and a JR x Whippet. They get on very well.

Not all greyhounds chase little dogs, mine is fine and pays no attention to them at all.

I have a BMW with no boot and only three door. Cliff lies happily on the back seat, and again falls asleep as he always does, he has shared the seat with a small dog too, no problems. Greyhounds are great pets.

As I said, I am not demonising greyhounds or large lurchers. It's just that my own dogs play very fast running games with each other, sometimes the games are veryphysical and get a bit rough. When you have a scenario of a very large running dog vs a small terrier, the terrier often ends up getting trashed at 25mph. I don't mean that grehounds attack or chase small dogs.

Thanks BigRed - yeah, Millie is a JRT i had thought about that as an issue, and i would have to discount anything likely to chase her or any other small furry at home because of the cat too. i'm completely open to options i'm sure i'll get shot down but i'd like to avoid staffies etc they're just not my kind of dog - nothing against them, i've met loads of lovely ones, but i just would prefer not to have one. i've got a really big interest in having a whippet - that would really be the ideal for size and type, dont know what it is about them, i just think they're lovely.

Buy a muzzle?

Yes, mine will course but his favourite friend is a border, this is when
she was 8 weeks old.
