We are thinking about getting a doggy.

What breed would you suggest -

We'll be wanting to take the dog running (3-10 miles)
Needs to be cat friendly
Be good to do some agility
small/medium as the house isn't that big
affectionate to all family members, not a 1 person dog like a collie

Flat coat retriever!

-Love going for long walks...i send ours off to keep my OH company when he goes running.

-They are madly in love with the cat - poor cat runs for cover when dogs get let out to avoid being licked to death!

-Very agile - i take them out hacking with me and they jump fences wih us when we don;t feel like doing gates!

-medium sized - smaller than a lab.

-loves everybody so much! Prefer people to other dogs. although will still have a woof at strangers!

I love them and wouldn't have anything else!

Hi

I know lots of border collies that work and are equally happy at home with the children when they get home. If brought up in a family environment then they will become affectionate family members so long as they are given enough exercise and brain stimulation. Perfect running companion

I have an english pointer. He rides out with the horses, is child, dog, cat, sheep and people friendly. He just loves every-one and everything. He is good in the house and loves to play with my 3 1/2 year old son. He is not for a novice owner tho as he does require lots of free running time and does not like to be left at home alone(even with having the other dog for company). He is my constant companion and friend, he's adorable. He gets upset if I go out and my husband is still at home. He paces, crys and runs up and down the stairs looking out of the windows. If windows are open he wil jump out and come looking for me. This is his down side!!!

If you dont like collies, then how about a working cocker spaniel? My friend has one and he is a fab little dog. Lovely size for the house and for children to play with. He takes him on long cycles and he keeps up no problem. He has a lovely nature, I quite fancy one but already have 2 dogs!

Happy looking

parson russell terrier! very good at agility if you get a bright one they excel at it. make fab family dogs, will run all day, good with cats, (im not sure i've ever had one go to a home without cats now i think about it....weird!) and generally In my experience alot better than other types of terrier with other dogs.

Want the brains of a collie, family member like the labrador playfulness of a golden retriever yet not overly big in the house, what about a nova scotia duck tolling retriever!

Funny you should say that. I was actually thinking PRT and called a breeder for a chat about them the other day.

Do you breed them?

A labradoodle! Ok, they're prone to being absolutely mental, ours chews anything not nailed down - and some things that are - and he isn't that small.....but he's absolute fun on four legs! Will run for miles, brilliant with every human, dog and cat on planet, jumps higher than my horse, and is utterly gorgeous to boot

This is him in the snow today:

He is a rescue, so has taken some, ahem, training, but is absolutely wonderful, everyone's best friend.
