I am looking to put my 14hh NF out on loan as i want to get a bigger horsey and something a bit more forward going and competative, but i just dont know what breeds to look out for! I want something a bit more sharp and challenging and around 16hh give or take a few inches but i dont like anything to chunky like welshys but i dont want a breed that gets injured easily like a lot of the tb etc are supposed to (or so ive heard!) Any recommendations?

never got on with any ID cross (had 3 or 4 in my lifetime), dont like them at all....

my last Irish Sports Horse was incredibly accident prone, a lunatic (brilliant competitor though) and she made up my mind never to have anything with ID in it again.

I loved my TB's while I was competing, now I'm not and I drive I go for Friesians, fantastic breed imo
 
you wouldnt say that if you'd met Tilly or Murphy!

Both my ID x TB's were manic - the only ID cross I had that was sensible and sound was ID x Arab believe it or not - weird sounding combination but a lovely horse, still going strong in his 30's and as honest as the day was long.
 
Yep, my IDxTB is a weird one too, but from what you've said you might be up for that! He has got nice movement, but can be pretty sharp with it. And he can think up vices you would never even have dreamt of!!! But I love him!

although I drive and only backed mine and rode her for a few weeks before we broke her to harness she has an unflappable temperment and will pass just about anything on the road - I didnt pay an arm and a leg for mine though

I loved Tilly too (she died last year), she could be brilliant or rubbish, one of her dressage tests she got two 10's and seven 9's, the following week it was mostly 3's and 4's because she didnt like the site of the arenas! It was the same throughout her career.

She had a huge jump and an equally huge buck!
 
Hey zaf I've got an ID x Arab and he is as yours is. Very good and sound, I've done everything with him from endurance and hunting to para dressage. I'd buy another if I could find one, but I've currently got a TB x Welsh Cob youngster who is also a nice manageable combination to go on with. Steered clear of ID x TB due to some having v. poor feet.
 
Hi tarquin, I loved my ID x Arab - he won the grade C at the Royal Norfolk show, evented successfully, hunted brilliantly, was a fantastic hack, everything he was asked he did well and he was only around 15.2. In his later years he did RDA as he was so quiet and reliable.

Yep, I'd have another if I saw one like him again.
 
I like tb/native crosses. You can get the sharpness of the tb with the character and toughness of the pony.
I've ridden some really nice ID x TB but they always seem like very grown up horses to me. I miss that naughty pony character.
 
my ID/TB is a great lad - very laid back generally unless something really upsets him, lovely temp, brill to jump, v sharp of the leg most of the time, had him 3 years and only been lame once (gravel) , no vices apart from mild headshaking , ideal bigger horse to do abot of everything - i hunt him, do dressage, SJ, excellent at XC - i love him! and hes gorgeous!and wasnt expensive at all - under £2000.

ha ha i dont know im afraid!!! didnt realise so many ppl hav probs with the ID/TB i was alays under the impression they are generally great horses with the agility of the TB and temp/strenth etc of an ID, but im prob biased!!
 
aww mines great cos hes mine if u get me , he does have a few confirmation faults - bit long in the back and tends to carry hid head v high so had to do ALOT of work building up correct muscles of his neck , but he is ace, wud reccomend this breeding to anyone. Mine is generally v laid back but wen someting upsets him the he seems o turn into more of a TB!!but takes alot to rattle him
 
Arab...

You'll never be bored... they can do everything (yes even jump/dressage and xc)... lots of bigger more substantial ones around these days (15.2-16hh with plenty of bone) and the best thing is they're about 40% cheaper than any other breed. You can get a seriously talented one for well under £5k. And a fun riding club type for well under £3K...
 
George is an ID/shire x TB he is 16.3 and chunky-ish with heaps of bone and he is soooo laid back you can do anything with him! He's not lazy though and he can't half move and he does get excited but in a totally controllable way - love him!
 
Well I know you said you dont want a chunky Welsh D. But quite a few of the "big" D's are lighter than the usual. Definately recommend them - my D is sensitive, a challenge yet fun as hell to ride!

Otherwise, what about an Anglo Arab. Anything can hurt itself, a TB is no more prone than anything else :P
