Looking for an allrounder about 16.2hh to hack, jump up to 110ish, do a bit of unafflicted dressage, cross country and hunt. Must be easy to handle, good to catch, shoe, clip etc. and under 12 years old.

How much will I need in my piggy bank for this paragon do you think?

Awww exciting times! I would say anything from 2.5k. I should imagine you could get something suitable for 3.5k with tack.

I think you would need to at least double that,, if you want it to be proven and pass a vet I would budget at least £5k and expect to see a fair few in that budget that are not what you want.

Probably less of the need for a piggy bank and more for a bank vault :D

I'd expect around 5-6k for most of this but probably not the finished article, more like 8k+ for it all... and a very long search!

Around the 10k mark.

I sold one that would have fitted your description (plus being very good looking!) 6 years ago for around that price and he sold within 3 days of being advertised!! I'm in NI too, so horse prices are generally lower than england!

I bought something similar in 2004, really well educated and nice quality, 10 year old, £8,500 went on to be my horse of a lifetime. Still got him in retirement. The only older horse I have ever bought and the time flew by so quickly as I had only been used to buying foals or unbroken stuff before him.

Good luck in your search.

Thanks, I'm not used to buying older horses either, but I'm getting old and need something ready made now to go alongside a youngster.

I'd agree that 10k is a rough starting point if in the South East. Knock off a few K if: it won't pass a vetting, regularly stops jumping, knocks lots of poles, doesn't like hard ground, has no competition record, hasn't been ridden for a year, is cold backed, has sweet itch, is u backed/green etc. Add a few more K if it has a good BD/ BE/ BS record, is good looking, etc.

As with all these posts there is a wide variety of interpretations as to what a buyer will take/expects will accept.
You could rock up to Irish horse imports and walk away with a 4yo 4K horse who in 6 months time could be just what is wanted.
You will note I did have quite a wide range!

I know a nice 6yo hunted but not competed who will be up in the 12-15 bracket (and I have no reason to believe won't sell at that) and another 6yo just sold for significantly more than that with 5 BE outings. Behind the scenes the really nice ones are selling for good money.

There will be plenty on the market on paper would fit criteria for smaller price 4-6k, but you'd be on a mission to find one that had been well produced and sound!

Oh good, you've cheered me up! I've just advertised one that has been out BE, and wondered if I'd overpriced him. Obviously not, going on this thread.....

I like furry legs and ears - show me Ted!

I am guessing you haven't seen the thread I started in 2012 called 'My next equine project'. If you want a laugh it is worth a look at. It is the story of a feral half Shire foal that found his way into my life.
