Long story as short as I can make it. Last year my grandad passed away and he had a dog. We had to rehome him so i advertised him on a free site. Someone came into contact and came to see him. As my mum was under a great deal of stress at the time she didnt do the things she should have in hindsight. She gave the dog away that same day but wanted to come visit him. Since then we have tried to contact them via the same site to find out how hes doing can we come visit. We have made calls and they have basically said no and been very distant claiming we would unsettle him. My mum sent a card at easter again asking to come see him and for photos no response.

Now in the past week we have rang several times no answer. So I raised the issue with the admin on the site we advertised him on. Eventually 3 days ago I got a reply saying basically they didnt know how to tell us but he had died 4 weeks ago just alseep in his bed. He was just 10 and always been a very healthy dog never been to the vets.

All my family found this hard to believe so we rang and again got very dismissive short replys and also had been give the wrong address 4 times.

Today we drove down to their house unbeknown to them and the place was a mess, clearly not a good state. We went and questioned the neighbour who basically told us he knows the RSPCA has been out there a number of times they have more that one dog (to us we believed our dog we gave them was the only dog they had) said that they buy and sell dogs too. He was very helpful and said he would look into their garden/ house and see if he could see him and contact the landlord.

Eventually we spoke to the people who sold us the same story. But also found out they got a female straight after getting our dog and was trying to breed him. They claimed he was walked 3 miles around fields and everything. These people are very obese and heavily breathing stood just talking to us. My cousin asked the question how many dogs she had and she bit her head of saying its none of your business if you wanna call the RSPCA then do so, your messing with the wrong person. They claimed they buried him a mile down the road in the woods? All things adding up becoming very suspect.

We had rang the RSPCA before but in short said they could only act on welfare case and we would have to have reason that he was not being looked after and we would have to have seen him etc... so they were no help.

My question is, is there anything at all that can be done, to either get our dog back (if they are lying just to get us off there case) or to just find out the truth. Any help appreciated.

I know this was a very very foolish mistake and we realise that now (although) I wasnt there at the time he was handed over only found out afterwards.

I don't really see what you can do TBH :( is there any microchip or tattoo which is registered to your late granddad or his address? But I can see why it would not be an RSPCA or police matter, the dog was handed to them.

It is a cautionary tale about these free websites, I am afraid and shows you some of the types of people who trawl them for easy money-making opportunities :(

Ten can be old age for more than a few breeds of dog though.

The only think I could think of would be to report them to the taxman for illegal earnings, if they are claiming any sort of benefit it would be illegal for them to make money selling dogs and/or pups. They may already have sold him on for cash :(
Also if the dogs are causing noise or mess they could be reported to the environmental department of the council.

I have now found 4 ads on the website in question for dogs she has to get rid of due to landlord but not our dog. I can't believe it we all feel so gutted and regret it so badly. Only hope we have now is the neighbour!

Report her to the site as a scammer, especially if she asking for any money for any of them?
Could you get in contact with the landlord? At least then ban her from getting any more dogs.

Try an advert asking if anyone has seen this dog? Preferably with a photo.
Believed adopted / sold from (area) some time in past however many months.
Willing to have back or would just like to know how he is please as he was taken under false pretences after a bereavement.

You gave the dog away so really this is your only hope but try environmental health if you can prove (adverts) that they are trading dogs to try & stop them doing it again.

Get a friend to reply to one of their adds, hopefully they will get to go in and take a look....if they see your dog they could express an interest and see if he is for sale. I'm sure in these circumstances you will offer a great deal of money to get him back.

Get a friend who can play the part of 'cacker scum' quite well

I agree- find someone they don't recognise, at least then they'll be able to have a good look round and you'll know if the dog is there or not. :(

So sorry for you. Agree with the above, get a friend to reply to one of their ads and try and get a look in their house to see if he is still there. Then your friend can feign falling in love with him and make an offer to buy him. Alternatively, you could offer the "owners" money to have him back. If they've already sold him, then your only option is to try advertising for him to see if anyone comes forward.

Really hope this works out for you - I cant imagine how I'd feel if any of my animals fell into the wrong hands.

Whereabout are you? Can anyone from here help?
