Im getting my horses companion sent off to be broken in next week. has anyone got any tips to stop him stressing out as he is going to be by himself for the next 6-8weeks, he is stabled at night and out through the day.
Get him another temporary companion? Put another horse at your yard in with him? Or ask around local stables and riding schools if they have a pony out of work which they would be happy for it to keep yours company for the amount of time your other horse is away?
If your horse stresses away from other horses it's not fair to keep it on it's own. They're herd animals!
I'm the school of thought that 'they'll get used to it'.
Juts prepare yourself for an unsettled pony for a couple of days, but he will calm down. 6 weeks isn't that long and there is no reason you can't keep on their own short term.
If he starts plowing up the fields by galloping round and round at the start then bring in to be on the safe side.
Lots of whinnying is to be expected, but will settle.
Get a goat/sheep/small animal to live with the horse. Maybe get a stable mirror so she can have a 'friend' at night.
My TB had to live on her own for a few weeks and she survived. I just made sure I gave her lots of attention and rode her everyday.
When my youngster was on his own for a week we put a toy parrot in the stable with him and he loved it. He chatted to it for ages and played with it in his field.
