What can I do with this mane? And feeding before an xc comp...

Hi All

Well my cb used to be hogged, but I have left her mane grow out. Its made her look less manly and als stopped her pink skin on her neck getting sunburn! Anyway, last winter her rug rubbed her mane and alas, now looks like this:

What can I do with this if anything??

I have a hunter trial next week and want her to look nice-ish! Also, someone is saying to me they fed their horse ots the night before a comp to give them bit of 'oomph'. What oats do you use (or do you use something else), how long before do you feed it to them?

I had thought of this but I thought it wasn't 'correct' to pull a cobs mane...and its the wrong time of year to do it? Could be wrong mind!
 
Don't give your horse oats the night before! Any changes to feeds should be made gradually, and not just put in a feed randomly. If your horse is lacking in energy, then get professional advice from feed manufacture about what to feed.

As for the mane, best thing to do is pull it so its all one length. Yes cons mane should be natural, but unless you plan to do showing it shouldn't be a problem!
 
Thats what I thought re:oats! She was just like nahh we always put them in the feed the night before. Eeek my girl is ok, was just wondering as this lady was saying about it
 
I'd pull it short to level it off. It will grow back a lot over the winter if you want it long again.

Do you do showing with her? If not there is nothing wrong with pulling it anyway. Our little cob does pc and jumping, so we pull his mane and trim his feathers (with scissors and comb, not clippers) - we got told to trim him by a working hunter judge and he wins most classes now! He looks really smart and sporty!

I wouldn't bother with the oats. Just increase what she normally gets, gradually over a few days, and then bring it back down afterwards.
 
Would you be able to put a running plait in her mane for the comp, the one that you braid along her crest in one long plait.

For ongoing management the only way i think you will get all of her mane the same length is to pull it all to the same length and avoid rugs with necks on for as much of the winter as possible, and wait for it to grow back.

What a lush mane! - apart from the bit that's been rubbed. I'd hate to remove all that lovely hair though! I think I'd settle for holding the reins a bit further up than normal and resting my hands on the rubbed bit!
 
My Iberian rubbed his mane just like that, and I managed to get a running plait into his. Just use plenty of gel and plaiting bands so it doesn't unravel from the rubbed bit.
