Hi my Welshie lives in but he box walks, and when he does he drags his back feet. Because of this he is wearing down the front of his hooves and my farrier says that is bad and to keep an eye on it. He is unshod behind so with out forking out an extra £30 every couple of weeks what can I do to protect his back hooves in the stable?
P.S. he doesn't do it when ridden it is only when he is plodding around in his stable.
Thank you
Nerys

Could you get rubber matting put in the stable?
I'd also get his soundness checked as it might be arthritic changes making him drag his feet.

he sounds bored to tears and depressed with being in all the time, I assume this is because you have limited grazing?

Rather than worrying about dragging his back feet - although I agree a back check or having a vet check him out is a good thing to make sure there is not a physical problem, although I think he would do it when ridden as well if there were - give him something to do! Tie up a suede on a string, put a football in his stable, move his "feeding stations" around to keep him interested and to stimulate his need to roam for food (ie split his hay into 2 or 3 piles around the stable, or tie his haynet in different places, split any hard feed into more than 1 bucket and place around his stable, hide carrots in his hay!). My old pony was stabled for many weeks due to illness and he loved a radio being left on! (he especially like radio 2!!! LOL)

He box walked when he lived out and i would put him in his stable doe a short time at the last yard he was at. He has a himilayan salt rock hung on his wall and if i put his hay on the floor he would poo in it and spread it every where (he does that with what he drops from his net.)
