What CAN'T You Do?

i cant tell when my horse is cantering on the wrong leg [ & have been reduced to having someone stand there & shout "wrong" - the shame]
i cant sit up straight
i cant ride with even a hint of elegance
i cant pull tails - well i can but never know when to stop

this is of course only the tip of the iceberg of non-compatence though:rolleyes:

Someone once told me "Ladies past a certain age musn't look down - the face may fall off".

So true! Looking up knocks decades off me!!!!!

(Only 'cause when I look down my jowls gather on my chin)

Pulling Tails - I'm scared!
Pulling manes - He's scared!

Hmmmm

I can't ride, plait, pull manes or tails, bandage, stop feet going through stirrups, keep reins same length consistently, keep thumbs on top (RI has resorted to making me carry a crop between my hands in an effort to cure me :p )

I do however have bags of confidence and thoroughly enjoy myself when I ride even if it goes t1ts up :p :D

I can't keep my mouth shut when Elizabeth is schooling Captain. It drives her mad and she throws me out! Not my fault if her circles are, at times squircles. :p

I can't find the courage to jump the way I did 30 years ago

I can't bear to ruin a hack by schooling Fany on it we like to nose our way around, how can she look over hedges with her head down, she is only 14-2hh :p:D

I can't resist the temptation to pamper Captain again drives Elizabeth mad, even though he is my horse!

I can't pull manes and tails and I can't plait to save my life!!! My first horse is an appy so haven't got any practice as she's go no hair!!

Keep my lower leg still.
Look where I'm going - I like to examine the back of the horse's head.
Lift my hands.
Keep my heels down in canter.
Plait manes.
Jump over 75cm - no idea why, it just scares me!

... there's probably more, but having read those I probably shouldn't be allowed on a horse at all!

I can't change my diagonal in trot by sitting for two beats... I can sit for 10s or so and come back rising in the right diagonal but two beats I just can't do...
And I can't control my right leg in the same way I control my left one - which means I can only do lateral work "properly" in one direction atm
My poor, long suffering ponies :(
I also can't plait tails to save my life  that's why I have natives and my traditional cob

Oh and I can't stop laughing at this thread :P

Clip in a straight line!

Not twist my pelvis to the right when cantering.

Rise comfortably in trot on the correct left diagonal.

SNAP!!!!! I shout at Lou when he has a go at schooling this often ends in arguments.....

I used to fly over 4 foot spreads quite happily, now you`ll be lucky to get me over 2' 6!!!!

I cant seem to get my confidence back :/

I cant seem to clip one year of horses without the clippers breaking halfway on the last one lol!

I cant wait for the summer!!

This list could be endless...

Another one for mane pulling - i get annoyed and out come the scissors and they both end up looking like they have lego style blunt hair cuts.

I can't ride, I am a mere passenger.

Love this!! :D

'tis true:)

Any trainer would have kittens if they saw me riding, I certainly couldn't get on an English horse nowadays and do anything with it:( I have a great deal of admiration for those who work so hard to achieve their goals.

Another one who can't pull manes. I can pull tails, plait to a good standard, clip and trim but unless I use a solo comb, I cannot for the life of me get a good straight line. I normally resort to bribery and offer to clean tack for the friend who CAN pull my horses mane properly! And people have tried to teach me too... doh..

I can't tell if I'm on the correct canter lead
I can't check my diagonals in trot without looking down
I can't get my hands to stay in the right place
I can't get my elbows to stay where they should
I can't jump any bigger that 2'3" without papping my pants
I can't seem to fix the left hand squintyness of my body
I can't get my confidence sorted out
I can't plait
My shoulders hunch alot...
My back does some funny movement in canter, no idea what I'm doing, my bottom stays in contact with the saddle and moves with the horse but many an instructor has been very confused by the rest of my top half!

I echo being a passenger most of the time! Looking at all that written down its a wonder I own any horses at all!

Brilliant post!!

I can't control my left side like I can my right side - particularly naughty left leg on left canter.
I can't grow a pair - am hopelessly wet about pretty much anything!
I can't plait a mane in anything under about a decade.
I can't go to a show without cleaning my tack to ocd levels.
I can't stop checking out other horses feet and being a hoof nerd.
I can't stop buying horsey books on amazon (am generally a geek-lastest buy of the scales of training is very good!).
I can't stop being a soft mum with my mare - she is my special girl but prob does deserve a few more b*****kings than she gets!
I can't school with my oh there - I ride like a twerp and he can't keep his mouth shut.
I can't stop being an uptight control freak over my riding, mares way of going and her care.

Well, I think that is enough for now, rather more can't's thank I'd like but I'm working on it!

When I used to ride regularly...

I can't plait a tail to save my life, my mane plaits are pretty good though!

I can't ride at shows. I suffer from show jumping amnesia and always get lost, I suffer from dressage amnesia and even on cross country I managed to always jump a different fence somewhere or take an alternative on a different grade that got me eliminated.

I can't ride strong horses. I can never "go with it". I just panic and want to cry like a baby.

I can't jump over 2ft 6 as I'm a compulsive worrier. I once (and I mean literally ONCE) got up to 4ft 6 in chase me charlie and threw a mega hissy fit as my Dad was talking to someone and only took photo's of me jumping a cross pole

I can't seem to keep my thumbs on top.

I can't do sitting trot elegantly, I look like a jelly ontop of a washing machine.

I can't keep my heels down and legs in the correct position when jumping.

I can't take criticism very well.

I can't be patient.

All excellent attributes to have when riding and dealing with horses :D :o

Resist the urge to make Bruce as bald as possible...

Ha! I'm exactly the same. Cass must be a completely hair free zone. I can't look at whiskers/fetlocks/stray hairs/un-pulled tails *shudder*
I also can't..
Look up! I'm always staring at Cassie's mane, her ears or even the ground.
Keep my reins short when jumping I always manage to have near washing line reins after the first jump which keep reappearing after every jump despite numerous attempts to keep a hold of them even though they're rubber and I'm wearing gloves..
Keep my lower leg back It always manages to creep forward. I blame it on my extremely straight cut saddle..excuses excuses :D
Oh, and can't stand bad mannered horses.

I can't control my right side like I can my left - between us we might make a half decent rider ;) how would you feel about a small amount of experimental surgery? :D

In fact, I think I might be your opposite - I have a screw loose when it comes to risk taking (with myself, I take measures to make sure the ponies are ok, of course!) and I can't ever seem to find time to clean my poor tack.

I think you got the better half :(

Blimey!!

HHO should hold a Clinic for:

  • Bandaging
  • Plaiting & Pulling
  • Lower Leg Position
  • Diagonals
  • Looking Up

We're all officially rubbish. Out of interest, have any of you lots done BHS Exmas? (Horse care/stable management exams with British Horse Society, not shopping & spending money exams with British Home Stores):D

I can keep thumbs on top but fail to keep my hands closed around my reins and ride with what can only be described as 'claws' instead of hands most of the time!
i cant bandage, plait tails, pull manes or tails, jump more than 2'9 without quivering like a cowardly custard, keep my heels down consistently in more than walk, stop being in front of the movement...to name but a few

YET I still cant stop critiquing my friends riding when watching them ride!! I know thats awful but its just i know what is right, unfortunately putting it into practice myself!!

Work out how to make text bold on here :( I feel such a HHO failure.

I also can't get my arse back in my saddle jumping. I used to, but somehow I've lost it, and now have this peculiar, very forward jump position, with my arse almost over the pommel at some point :o:eek:

J&C - you're barred!!! :D

Highlight the word and select the bold B from the options above! It's a whole new world, colouring in and highlighting words, gives everything so much more meaning.
