My 14 year old Hotpoint washing machine is on its last legs - not due to abuse...I've never washed anything horsey in it bigger than a saddle cloth / snuggy's hood / travel boots.

I am researching replacements & wondered what capacity of machine I'd need to be able to wash a zero fill turnout? It' gets v pongy & I'd love to be able to wash it frequently. Would a 10kg machine be big enough? That seems to be the biggest capacity machine available at a 'normal' price as after that, the prices seem to jump steeply.

PS *DON'T* tell o/h of what I'm planning for the new purchase or I'll be in trouble... He thinks it's to save money by having the machine on only half as often as it will have twice the capacity...

Suggestions for super sturdy machines welcomed!

I had a top loading 10kg machine, which just about fitted a 6 foot 9 medium turnout in it! Was a squash and didn't wash it awfully well. Was ok for 6 foot mediums though. Should think a no fill 6 foot 3 would be fine.

No fill 6'3" Rambo turnouts fit fine and wash well in my 9kg machine. The 6'3" 200g Rambo turnouts fit in the machine (just), but don't wash well, (too tightly packed).

Re which brand, I recommend changing from Hotpoint, as their quality has gone right downhill recently. We moved from Hotpoint to Miele, which is brilliant but a tad pricey ;), but will hopefully last 20+ years. The wash and rinse quality is a revelation.

I'm always washing rugs! Think mines 9kg, I get no fill, lightweight & medium weight 6'6" rugs in, I always do them on 2-3 long cycles to make sure they're clean. Also with turnouts I always do a couple of spin cycles to finish or they come out all drippy.

I was mine in a 10kg machine with no problems. The only thing I'll say is make sure you used a proper rug wash and not normal laundry powder/liquid. I used to think rug washes were a bit of a scam but I've noticed that all the rugs I wash at home are no longer waterproof despite reproofing them after, whereas the heavier rugs that I send off are waterproof because they get washed with rug wash before being reproofed. I've spent a fortune on rugs learning that lesson!

Mine fit in my 9kg no problem, today a med stable rug went in no issue! Re proofing, you should run the machine empty for a cycle no detergent before you use reproofer in it as otherwise the detergent interferes with the proof.

Would do that in my 9kg dedicated horse/dog machine, but will probably replace that machine when it dies with a 12kg, as most of our rugs are 6'6 plus. Stable rugs get washed twice atm in the 9kg can just about squeeze a 7ft in if I fold it carefully.

Oooohhh, dog beds...I'd forgotten about them. We have 2 Rottweiler-sized dog beds, & they could seriously do with a wash.

That's a good tip re using rug wash.

I did experimentally stuff Trev's summer t/o into my existing machine, but it was a bit of a squash, so I concluded that it wouldn't be wise & took it back out.

Fairly standard washer dryer - either 6 or 7 kg.
I do all my no fill turnouts (6'6") and liners/stable rugs up to a 200g though the 200'aren't especially thick.

I put them on a 'stains' cycle and do an extra rinse unless reproofing.

What about this, Casey76...? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Hoover-DW...274315?hash=item1a0c67bacb:g:7~QAAOSwAYtWPVJZ

I've got severe washing machine lust now... Kind of torn between hoping that the existing machine can limp on for another 6 months to help with the cashflow, & hoping that it explodes spectacularly the next time I put it on, forcing me to buy a new one & go on a mad washing spree... OMG, I *love* washing things...
