What car do you all tow with?

Defender. It is the ultimate tow vehicle, never ever worry about ground, hills and that’s with two large horses on board. Chuck the tack and dogs in the back and 5 mates and off you go.

BUT would I recommend buying one? Probably not. They breakdown all the time and are not very comfortable, particularly if you are used to functioning electrics/aircon and water tight vehicles. They also get nicked so often that waking up to it still on the drive is a relief and some find them heavy to drive.

If I have to get something else I’d look at another truck. I tow two fairly often and either way would not want to be towing close to my weight limit often. It knackers the car.

I have one and the only reason I didn't recommend in was because I got the impression OP wanted something a bit smaller - or at least didn't need something with the tow capacity. I totally agree it's the best tow vehicle out there, I've towed two big horses around Welsh hills for many years and it's never struggled.

It's just the other stuff it's not so great at. I do very little mileage other than with the horses so can get away with it not being the most comfortable or fuel efficient. I've had very few mechanical problems in the 8 years I've had it but have heard reports of lots of issues. It does have a lovely water feature / paddling pool built in. Mine is a newer one and security is better so I don't worry about that so much.

I joke it’s a bit of a ladies truck as it is compact - fits perfectly in a parking space whereas some trucks and other 4x4s very much struggle in small parking spaces.

I agree if you need to use it everyday the fuel efficiency does become an issue. I had it as my only vehicle for sometime (around 18 months) and let’s just say I was lucky I really loved it as by the end we were not on talking terms!

Now mine is only used for muddy journeys and towing and is very happy.

I had a colleague at work (who hid the Daily Mail inside the Guardian to read it, sums him up) who thought it was hilarious that I, a little lady, drove such a huge car. He drove a Polo. He wouldn't listen when I told him that it was shorter than his car.

There was one space in the car park known as the 'space of death' as it was so difficult to get in and out of. It was always the last space to fill before you then had to go across the road and pay for parking. He couldn't get his Polo in there but I got Wilf in there regularly. He'd often arrive before me but have to park over the road while I just parked in there. (It helped that I could drive up the bank to get round the corner!) It saved me a fortune.

Hi I’m looking at getting a 16/17 plate Kia Sportage with the 2200kg towing capacity. There seems to be a few different variants which say they can tow this weight, both 2L engines - a 138bhp or 184bhp. Does BHP matter when towing as long as the capacity is enough?
I’m new to towing so don’t fully understand the cars requirements!
Thanks

I have a 138bhp 17 plate sportage , it tows very well my 621kg horse in iw510 , certainly wouldn’t tow 2 though. Higher bhp is an advantage towing as I think I’m right in saying it has more torque which helps pulling away up hills that said I’ve had no problems with my 138.

Thanks. I have a 505 so I think these are slightly lighter. Would mainly be my 1 lightweight 15.1 I would tow but occasionally would like to tow 2 so may be best to get the higher BHP then?

If you can find one yes, but either will do a very good job towing what you want to tow

Discovery 3 and an Equitrek Spacetreka L. My car costs a fortune to run/keep on the road but I love it. Walked in to the house the other night after being out towing in the snow and told my husband that if I ever think about having anything other than a large Land Rover of some type to remind me how good they are!

Ifcar.
And you need a county to turn them round in … we have one and also a Range Rover- imo the range rover is the ultimate tow vehicle… i forget im towing whilst driving it and it almost hitches itself up

Discovery 4, absolute beast at towing a 925kg Clydesdale in equi trek trail trekka L. And two 16.2 medium weight hunter types. You wouldn’t know you had a trailer on there let alone two horses! Gas guzzlers but so worth the power.
