I am selling my Vauxhall Vectra saloon on ebay because it is unsuitable for my 2 year old Clumber/Springers boys.

But what should I get instead - I'm thinking of the Estate route but what!!? Vauxhall, VW, Volvo.......? I've been looking at Astra Estates which look quite roomy.

I want a reliable workhorse that isn't going to let me down, budget is £1800. We go to Norfolk every other weekend so will need to be reasonably economical too..

What do you recommend?

Have you considered a Skoda Octavia? Even the saloon version has by far the biggest boot I've ever seen on a car, I can lie down flat in ours with room to spare (I was so astounded I had to get in to prove it :p). We have the silly sporty VRS version but it there's lots with more economical engines and the estate version is mahoosive.

Something like http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/1331733.htm. If you scout around you might be able to get a leather interior for not much over your budget. :)

Ah right ok, I must admit I've seen a few of the estate ones go past me and they do look really nice. Will have to find one in a car park to have a closer look - which is a habit I've got into lately and think I will soon get into trouble ;)

Thank you for replying, and nice black cob by the way - I have one too :)

Or a Skoda Fabia, smaller than Octavia but I can get 2 GSDs comfortably in the back of mine. I used to have an Astra and the Fabia is roomie and was cheaper than equivalent age Astra.:)

I am usually a car numpty but my Dad has a Skoda octavia (the diesel estate) which we put his oversized lab, and my two spaniels in (springer and sprocker) and they all have room to lie down......plus according to it's onboard thingy it does 50mpg :D

Police use them - ambulance are set to get them :D apparently they're the same as a VW but without paying for the name!!

Precisely. :D Ours has cutouts under the dash and in the front grille where they install the flashy blue lights, lol. I was all for getting the big diesel estate but OH came home with the VRS version in bright lemon yellow... *sigh*

Do try and have a peek in the boot if you pass one, it's amazing how gigantic it is as it doesn't look nearly so big from the outside. Sadly I'm not insured to drive ours so when I want to take the dog out by myself the poor sod has to get into the back seat of my elderly Micra. :o
