Now that our family has grown to include 2 small children and 3 dogs, we've decided that it's time I had a bigger car since I can't fit the dogs, babies and pushchair all in my current car to go for walk, which with 3 dogs is a bit of a nightmare!

So it makes sense for us to get a 4x4, sell the horsebox (only a v basic hunting lorry that works well but isn't comfortable) and replace it with a nice trailer.

So I'm quite tempted by the Fautras Oblic 2+ (a 2 horse trailer with horses on the diagonal and no living).

What car would you recommend we get to tow it with? Until we've sold our house, I have no idea of budget but would be likely to get a 2nd hand one rather than new.

Ideally it would be a diesel car.
 
We a curruently looking. I wouldn't get an Ifor Williams trailer (the new one, I have an old one and its fine) as they aren't as good as they used to be.
Regarding the car the Land Rover Disco 4 is best, but obviously not the cheapest. It depends on weight of horse and trailer you are towing, discovery and range rover tow 3.5 tonnes. Look on www.uktow.com to get the towing capacity of the car you want. We have an old old Landrover Disco that is very unreliable, though most old 4x4s are. Kias are ok, but the mazda one is a bit rubbish. Also look aon whatcar?
 
Beg to differ on the old Landy bit... We have an old L reg 200tdi disco - it's the model which is the same as a defender underneath (part from the transfer box but that's way too much info). No dodgy computers, funny air suspension etc. Still has aircon and (touch wood) has not let us down in 2 years. 35mpg as long as you don't treat it like a sports car.

The good bit is finding an unrusty one. They are out there... If you want more info and diagrams showing you where the rust usually is, pm me.

Taken us from Chester to Kingsbridge and back, twice now. Not a hiccup. We have 3 dogs too and there's loads of room. Strangely we're looking at the oblic +2 as well. Easily towable with a landy.
 
We have a Kia Sorento and a Bateson Ascot trailer, they work brilliantly together and the trailer has a built in tack locker in the front which is very handy and leaves you with loads of extra space in the car.

To be fair ours, N reg, has been excellent for many years. It towed very well, literally cannot get stuck, even when everyone else is, and it still excellent off road. It is now a rust bucket and is leaking stuff everywhere, but still I would buy a newer disco tomorrow as it seems Landrover have especially made them for towing horses about. The interior hs loads of useful cubby holes etc and is really well desingned, but after the engine blow up on the A66 while towing I hve lost faith in tht particular car.
