Hi all!
I’m in the market for a new car and preferably want one that can tow. I don’t own a trailer currently but looking at the ifor 505 (but open to other options)
It will mainly be for towing a 14.2hh (440kg) and a 13hh (320kg) together. Occasionally a 16hh (550kg).

What would people recommend that isn’t going to break my bank in insurance?

TIA

I tow 1 horse in a 505 with my BMW X3. have also towed with the X4 and 5 series estates, all tow like a dream. though they probably will break the bank, unless you went for an older model.

There are so many options out there. I was considering a Kia Sorento. I’ll deffo take a look at these though. Thanks!

Toyota Hilux 3l diesel, manual. Big, heavy and solid. Not great on the fuel economy for every day though, and modern day car parks can be a hassle.

Currently 3l Discovery but DH is talking about getting me a hybrid Range Rover Sport, not sure if he wants me to tow with it or not.

I have a 2L cdti SE Vauxhall Insignia which was 160bhp but now the dpf has been remapped is around 220bhp, it tows lovely and is very economical.

My trailer is 650kg and the horse was 700kg so it more than easily towed it with loads to spare. I'm planning on buying a similar height/weight horse so need a newer car now.

You don't need a great big 4 x 4 to tow especially with smaller animals.

I'm buying another Insignia soon, would like the same model as it was doing around 42 mpg towing but probably want a 67/68 plate this time. I have the money but just not the head space at the moment.

Hope you find something nice OP

VW Touareg is great! Loved towing with that, we now have a Volvo XC90 and that is very good too but a bit of a gas guzzler x

Old school disco 2 here 😊
Yes it's expensive on fuel 🙈
Yes it requires maintenance, I have a lovely on site mechanic which helps.
I still love it and it tows beautifully and feels safe.
Remember it's not the pulling that's the issue it's the stopping!

We have a full fat petrol Range Rover, an old shape defender and a new shape defender.

All tow superbly but the old shape defender has a crap turning circle.

Mercedes ML350, not very economical but I wanted a 3.5t tow capacity and it still be a nice car to drive.

Ditto with an ML350! Love it, as you say, not at all economical but tows like a dream and has the boot space for my 3 labs. I prefer having a big car to tow with safety wise, plus it's lovely to drive!

From going from an Mitsubishi Outlander (with lightweight trailer and just in the tow limits) to the ML350, I don't think I'd willingly go back to a smaller tow car, it gives so much security! Though you do have to weigh up the running costs 🤣 🫣 .

Toyota hilux, 3l auto diesel. I blooming love it, yes it's not the best mpg.
Used to have a Mercedes ML, loved that too, but a bugger to keep clean, carpet in the boot 🙈, only thing not keen on was it had a detachable tow bar
