What causes a pony to become a 'dirty stopper' ??

my horse has recently started putting in filthy stops.

The reasoning being that he has realised that running out doesnt get me off, nor does it stop me from having another go at the jump.

Have you investigated why he's started running out in the first place?! Horses don't sit there and plot how to get their riders off just to annoy them, they do it because something isn't right

OP just had another thought related to what PF just said. I think you said pony is rushing. The temptation when they are rushing is to think they are carrying you to the jump and are going to jump it and then they panic themselves when they think they can't. They do need support from rider. Frank actually looks quite strong when he is jumping but I have to use a lot of leg to keep him up and together but I also dont let him rush.
hope that makes sense.

That is precisely what my horse does ester - he doesn't rush as such but he pulls and it is very easy then to think they are going to do it for you and you are tempted to just let them do it but you can't, with certain horse you have to hold and sit in the saddle all the way to the fence.

When you say you used to jump him "very forward" - do you mean fast? If so, this would certainly not have helped matters and probably scared him after a while.

The only experience I have of a pony starting to refuse was my very first pony - I was 9 and didnt know better so would pretty much jump him every single day at home, then he refused point blank to jump at shows because he was sick of it! Id make sure you're not therefore, over-doing it with him. As an example, my current horse does BSJA and BE - he isn't jumped EVER at home! Purely at comps and he's always nice and fresh, never goes stale.

Also, make sure you're not over-facing him. Since you're having problems, go right back down in height so if he stops you can easily do it from a stand still.
