Since my horse has been injured and out of work i have ajusted her feed acordingly.

I did her her on dengie original with a few handfuls of ready grass to bulk it out but she went off it a bit and didnt eat it all.

I now feed her happy hoof as she really like it again with some ready grass thrown in + supplements.

I seem to be getting through a lot at the moment tho and was wondering what everyone else feeds and how much ish they pay for what weight bag?

I am due to start riding again next week if she gets the ok from the vet so might need to play about a bit with her feeds.

She is a hairy 16.2 full tb who is a good weight.

I don't see the point in feeding chaff for any other purpose than to use it as a vehicle to get supplements into their feed without them noticing. The only other reason I would use it would be for horses with laminitis.

Other than that, it's a waste of money and does nothing for the horse that the horse doesn't get from hay.

She has to have supplements so i need it for that but i like to feed her and keep the routine the same.

She is in from 4 pm ish untill 8-9 am so i like to bring her into a tea and a nice big haynet. I like to give it so its something different to hay and add a bit more interesrt.

Her weight is fine on it but im looking into changing the brand but dont want the sticky mollased chaff.

She cant have mixes but if she drops weight with work i will put her back on her cond cubes.

Dont want anything too sugery

How about one of the Dengie ones then? Alfa A? See my guys over don't need any of these as we grow all of these goodies in our hay fields so they get it daily in that way. I only feed straights as a little extra.

I have a 17.3 Irish X TB and he has Showshine Chaff which is Cherry Oil Chaff, he loves it

Ita excellent for the coat, its made his coat look lovely and has a real nice shine to it.
Costs £4.50 Per Bag, which lasts me a month... And thats giving him a scope for Dinner and a scope for Breakfast.

Ive just been looking at the mollichaff online.

I feed 1 large round scoop twice a day. Do you know the weights of the bags?

Also is the mollichaff coated but not sticky and clumpy?. I think she likes the happyhoof becuaes its coated but not heavily mollased so not as fattening.

The Alpha A allegedly has alfalfa in it; just looked like twigs to me though LOL!! Maybe all the green dust in it is the leaves all crushed up in transit.

I use Alfa A Oil for Luke as he doesn't like actual oil added to his feed, and abit of Alfa A Lite with SWUO's feed to bulk it out abit as she really doesn't have alot, and I need to get her supps into her.

ETS the Alfa Oil is £10 a bag, the Alfa Lite is about £9.50

mollichaff is packed in 12.5kg bags, it is very fine but not too sticky, personally i prefer dengie or dodson and horrell chaffs which are rougher cut and take longer to eat...

sorry but i disagree, the addition of chaff/chop will help a horse chew more thoroughly, enabling it to get more goodness out of it's food, also decent hay can be hard to get in some areas, so being able to provide a good quality chop to top up with is a godsend for some....
now i see there is a trend for black sunflower seeds...now there is something i wouldn't bother with for horses....

i have seen alfa a from start to finish, got a change to visit their plant in essex... i can assure you it does contain alfalfa!! you are used to seeing it in long form are you not??? sometimes it looks a little crushed due to not enough molasses or oil being added at the plant, i don't mind it being a little stalky, i use it for a sec c that cannot tolerate mix of any kind without her skin flaring up, yet she is in fantastic condition on dengie alfa oil.....

How much?

I pay £8.10

I've just changed my mare from Mollichaff to Alfa A lite as the other stuff had big clumps of molasses in and sent her mad! She loves the Alfa A a lot more too although it's not cheap from our local feed place

I feed Dengie Good Doer at £8.50 a bag to my natives.. They get that dampened down once a day for some vits and mins...They don't need any calories..It seems to go down better than Hi Fi Lite which a bit bland..

My younger neds on the spillers conditionrt fibre at the mo as she's struggling to keep weight/condition. It's around £10.50 a bag.
Normally I don't bother with chaffs and theyre just fed nuts and sugar beet

I feed cheap molassed chaff - generally countrywide own brand at £3.99.

Use it to balance out feeds so non workers feel less hard done by and also slows them all down. Plus I like feeding it and have done for 20 years, so hard to change!

Its interesting to hear what you all feed and for what reasons.

I fed her cheap molassed chaff before and she truly went off her head hehe.

I liked the dengie i had her on before ( dengie original ) but she was leaving the last bit of her feed so thats when i put her on happy hoof as she likes that and doesnt leave any.

I did give her some of my friends hifi lite the other week when she ran out and my feed delivery didnt turn up and she did eat that but it did seem a bit bland.

She might be a full tb but she is on the porky side at the mo due to being out of work for 8 months.

As im due to start riding again this thursday im going to keep her on the happyhoof while i bring her back to work so as not to change anything but i might try the dengie good doer or something else when she back under saddle.

Thanks everyone.

Sorry, the comments from one or two here where you say 'seems bland' - does your horse/pony find hay and grass bland? Not getting at anyone, should smiling

Goddy has Alpha A Lite. This is because it is the lowest sugar rate of them all, but Alfalfa is high in protein and is good for his coat and feet! I feed a high % alfalfa mix anyway, so only feed the Alfa A to bulk his dinner out, and to help keep weight on him without overfeeding mixes. He also gets good quality hay and hayledge.

Star has Alfa A. Don't know how much I pay.

Forgot to say! Her diet consists of Alfa A, Fast Fibre, Seaweed, Corn Oil and the odd small scoop of Allen & Page Hacking Mix if she has worked hard. That and ad lib hay keep her weight fine. She is worked 1 - 2 hours per day and is a 16.2 ISH 6 y/o.

I think the high fibre diet suits her!
