Hello, I have a 14.1-14.2 medium weight cob, he lives out all year round, and at the moment he is having mix and a few extra nuts but i wanted to intrduce some chaff into his diet. i was thinking Mollie Chaff Original maybe because some the owners of my yard use that on there horses but i didnt know if Hi-Fi would be better?! Please help me :L xxx

Is he a good doer? overweight? needs weight on? What's his temperament, fizzy or calm?:) What mix and nuts are you using?

I don't mean to be cheeky buy why do you want to introduce chaff - does he need something? I always feed according to their needs rather than my wants.

Hi, there's certainly a lot of choice out there. My cobs are good doers and prone to weight gain, I give them a handful of Hi Fi Lite so they don't feel left out. Some chaff are goey with molasses, which is fine if you want to keep weight on, but not so good for the chubby ones.

i dont use chaff. i dont waste my money on these showshine chaffs etc. i use aldwick grass for my mare mix with fibrebeet just so it slows her down as shes a ganet!

I like FibreG or Mollichaff apple but that is for my poor doer WB. I would use a lite chaff for Fany if she was fed, depends on why you want to use it. I feed it to get even more fibre into my colic prone lad.

I use chaff to stop my horse eating so fast and to get more fibre into his diet. Is there a particular reason you want to feed chaff? Because if your horse doesn't need it it will be a waste of money for you.

Tbh if he was mine I would totally change his diet, I don't like mixes due to the very high starch levels and I feel these modern mixes have a lot to answer to in respect to health issues. Mollichaff is just straw covered in mollasses which again I won't feed as they don't need the added sugar.
Personally if he's a good doer I would use something such as fast fibre with a vit/min supplement added and that's it. If he needed added weight I use micro linseed for calaries which is a fab source off omega oils and will add weight safely without high levels off sugar and starch. My tb are feed different again but all low sugar/starch

OP I bet you are utterly confused now!
If you want to stick to mollichaff then I feed mollichaff calmer instead of original is it is less sugary and has other goodness in it as well. I have a chunky boy so he only gets that in winter as a token feed really, no mix or nuts.
if you want to save money get a complete feed like Spillers Cool Fibre or Happy Hoof, or dengie healthy hooves. THey are mainly chaff and have a few nuts in to make them tasty but they also contain all the vit/mins your horse needs. Very simple, you only need to feed that on it's own to give horse everything, no mixing feeds or messing about! and you only need one feed bin! They are low calorie so great for your cob.

If you want to add more fibre to the diet I would highly recommend fast fibre by Allen and Page.

I used to feed chaff in such small amounts that I would be wasting it as it was manky before I finished the bag but the fast fibre is like mini pellets that you soak for 30-60 seconds so they last much better. The fast fibre is also low in sugars etc. Mollichaff original is molassed and higher in sugar.

My Welsh A is a very good doer and he has a small hand full of this morning and night to keep him quite whilst the WB has his dinner.

WB has chaff to slow him down as he hoovers food and I'm terrified he'll get choke

Not aimed at you personally but this is what I do not understand about "complete" feeds such as safe and sound, happy hoof. Surely you need to feed a fair amount to provide the sufficient vitamins, minerals etc or am I being thick?

You are correct. Youd need to feed the recomended amount to make it worth buying and to provide the right level of vit and mins, usually it works out something ridiculous like 2 stubbs scoops twice a day, one bag would last you a week!!! if you didnt feed that much then you would need to add a balacer or something similar, but then it would be pointless buying the chaff....

I use honey chop, my boy loves it although if he is a good doer its prob not the best idea but its so much better than most chaffs i have tried and it seems to be the only one that isnt dry and dusty

Oh and they have lots of flavours :D
