What class?

I'm hoping to do some showing with Flash this summer, so we're working hard to get our flat work up to scratch as it will help his jumping too

but have had mixed suggestions of what to enter him in! He was entered in a coloured class and working hunter last summer by previous rider and the judge was horrified that he was going to be a jumper, so we thought we'd do a bit of everything.

He's 15hh at the moment, but muscling up and filling out nicely, we think at this rate he will make a big 15.2hh. His breeding is apparently American paint x WB. I've been told he'd make a lovely small riding horse and also a great WH, however obviously these are pretty different types of horse, and I was also wondering how coloureds are viewed in these classes??

Depending on your age, he could do intermediate classes.
He could also do small hunter, WH and coloured classes.
He is lovely, and does have something a bit different about him.
You have to get the right tack and think about what will suit his face etc. If he were mine he would have dark havanna and his noseband hoiked up quite a bit - will make him look much more handsome.

yes I do need to sort that noseband out, it's on the top hole and its pony sized! He has quite a dished face, a few people have asked me if he's an arab (!!??)

I thought he looked araby. You should invest in a plain hunter bridle (get me - made of money!

), he looks a bit native and it will really smarten him up.

I'm slowly accumulating tack, he came with absolutely nothing so money wise its all a bit tight, and due to his rapidly increasing size I didn't want to splash out on an expensive saddle for him to grow out of! He's grown from 14.1hh last march to 15.1hh (with shoes on) now!

He looks like a NSH (National Show Horse) - American Saddlebred x Arab to me... however, there are strict breed rules and I would imagine he would have papers and be registered if he was.... he could be American Paint x Arab or American Pain x WB (Some WBs have a high % Arab blood).

Sorry forgot to add - on the basis that he is very araby, I would stick to small riding horse/hack and coloured classes as he isn't really a hunter type

Hes lovely, was he bred over here? We had a gorgeous palomino paint as a livery for a while, very leggy and fine like yours that was shipped from US.

Pats for him! Obviously coloured will be an obv. choice, round here in classes theres a mix of cobs, traditional hairies and fine plaited up ones like yours. My coloured came 2nd in 2 WH classes last year, but hes a bit chunkier but colour doesnt matter,its a bonus!. Riding horse? prefer wh as theres jumping tho!

Pasha, I'm not sure of exact details but I remember the previous rider (a friend of mine) mentioning him having papers, so I will chase that up because it would be nice to know!

Prittstick, he was bred in Holland, and imported from Belgium last year for dressage, but then they discovered he could fly 1.40m as a 14.1hh so his role changed a little! Sadly for them and luckily for me he grew too big for juniors, so the jumping side of WH definitely appeals!

He does look particularly finely built in those pics, but he's filled out a lot, still looks babyish tho, so he may be OK for WH at local level

If he has papers definately get them - you'd know what his breeding is and you could show him in the breed classes too!

I'm going there at the weekend so will try to remember to ask about papers. I seriously doubt we're going to be a huge success at anything we do, he's my fun horse and it will just be nice to give it a go for the experience, I've never done showing before

Never say never! It was my first time out on my boy (showing under saddle) last June and we won out of a class of 12 experienced competitors (it was an open class)!

Ideal for Show Riding Type which is an under 25 class.

I wouldnt do WH as really he is a bit light, but good tip if you do want to do WH leave his feathers (if they grow) fairly long but tiding. This will add the illusion of slightly more bone.

Also check out the CHAPS website as they will be able to detail the coloured classes that will be suitable.
