now at first glance i know you have all said well shes a bay, but.. the reason i ask is that she has white flecks of hair all the way through her coat and she has a black mane and tail but her mane is full of white hairs, now i always thought that a roan is any colour with flecks of white hair through the coat, so is she classed as a roan??

well thats what i mean, if you look at her she just looks bay but its not untill you stand next to her that you see all the white hair through her coat, il see if i can get a close up shot of her coat 2moro but i dont think it will come out very well

i'd say bay

our mare has flecks right through her coat aswell, she has a patch of white flecks on her neck and is getting more on her flanks as the years go by. but there isnt enough to be classed as a roan :P

She's a bay sabino.
See how her leg white is jagged around the edges? That's caused by Sabino - also causes the white hairs through her coat which is referred to as sabino roaning.
It isn't the same as normal roaning, that's a different gene.

What Eluana says?
I know both my bay & my chestnut have very minimal 'ticking' which is something to do with rabicano or sabino? I think Dan's might be rabicano and Dimp's might be sabino but could be wrong! Dan's is very minimal.

so is it just a term for a colour of something in the breed? shes tbXISH but her parentage is unverified.

Sabino is really just a colour, like bay or dun or roan.... but like you get 'blood bay' and 'wild bay' and 'light bay' with paints you get different types - sabino being one of them I believe? (don't ask me to name the rest, paints & appys confuse the hell out of me! I'm guessing Eluana knows more!)

Sabino is a gene that causes some of the white markings you find on horses.
You can normally tell if a horse has sabino by the jagged edge to the white on their legs & face, and normally have a patch of white on the underside of their belly.
The outward 'expression' of it can vary, from minimal to maximum, where the whole horse is white with maybe a few hairs of it's base colour.
It isn't really breed specific, but it won't be found in every breed.

The variations in bay's (and of course others) colouring, depending on which one (blood, wild etc), is known/thought to be down to something called pangare, the sooty gene or what agouti allele/s they have.

Some white markings genes are Overo, Tobiano, Dominate White, Sabino, Rabicano & of course the Leopard Complex & PATN which is what gives Appys, Knabstuppers & others their spots.
Most horses with white in the UK are base colour + tobiano.

(I'm still learning, so some of the above may be wrong. :o )

thats really interesting, shame i dont know her parents really so i could research them, i might try and contact her breeder and see what response i get, learn something new everyday :D

This is a sorrel sabino frame overo (if you want to be particular) if you feel like disagreeing, argue with the APHA not me;)

You can clearly see the jagged white (lacy) edges to the white patterns on her body, face and legs. The edges of the markings blend gradually into the darker colouring.

If your mare has white ticking (c**n tail) at the top of her tail with white hairs in her tail then it is rabicano. Oh for Goodness Sake c o o n is NOT a bad word :(

Otherwise, she's a good honest bay and nothing wrong with that at all.:)
