This is lola my new exmoor filly. she has been presumed to be bay but when she is outside in the natural light she looks like a dark dun so i wondered what u thought?

Thanks :) I thought so, i just imagined if the blackish/ brown on top wasn't there, she would look really dun! And I haven't seen that many different exmoors so was just checking.

Definately bay, I have a welsh boy who is even lighter than that, we considered if he was actually a buckskin, he's on the border but would be a smokey buckskin, I could have a test done, but seriously I think he's just a sun bleached bay.

I would have her as a bay, if her legs, mane and tail are definitely black. Exmoors can be brown, bay or dun but she is much darker than I would say the dun ones are. As a primitive breed they have pangare/mealey gene which means they are paler underneath :)

the banner at the top of the page I think shows the various colours well, you can seelthe one at the back is much paler :) http://www.exmoorponysociety.org.uk/index.html

It looks as though she is going dun; but at the moment she is bay with mealy points :)

My horse is like that - he is dark bay in winter with mealy soft points but in summer is a rich bay :)

She is a black based pangare. I don't know if she has agouti (the gene that causes bay on a black based horse) from the photos but you could get her DNA tested to find out. :)

Thanks everyone for your help, I haven't had her through winter yet so will be interesting to see colour change.

She is lovely what are your plans for her

Well she is 2 so i am going to lightly back her and show her in hand next year and then i will be doing working hunter showing and dressage mainly with her :) Hopefully she'll be big enough as she is currently about 11.2-3 and 12hh + behind but i know exmoors can carry more :)
Possibly will breed her as well in a few years but would probably be to an appy as i love them so much :D
