what colour is this?

i guessed he was a minimally expressed tobiano but am intrigued by his base colour - cant decide if it's bay, roan etc etc....

edit - how does mal-nutrition affect the coat colour? Intrigued.

It makes his poo which he has been lying in, a different colour to the rest of his coat?

When I was a kid, YM taught me to call a foal this colour 'odd coloured'. YO's son taught me to call it cat food.

He's a dark bay coloured (1 spot makes a coloured!) who hasn't been fed right, hence the discolouration.

He probably still is deficient in things I'd suspect. Bargepole. Touch. Do Not.

Ummm, don't think you are quite right there. My foal was born chestnut, now greying out and has highlights in her mane just like this chap. She has never been treated 'poorly'. It is just a colour, and he is bound to change his coat.
I like him too, no need for a bargepole.

I don't think they were referring to his highlights meaning malnutrition, I love my boys highlights:

I dearly hope he keeps them, but am sure it's just foal colouration, my boy was 1 in this pic so still baby.

I think they were more talking about his tubby belly, general coat condition, and the fact he looks like he's standing on his heels!!!!!

Based on that Serenity what would you say my boy above is, highlights from malnutrition as they are mostly at the tips, or just colouration? Or just foal coat still to grow out?

I'd say bay tobiano, with sabino, and probably greying out too.

The striping in the mane, across the top of the tail & the grey ticking in the coat point to him carrying the rabacino (sp) gene.
Doubt he'll grey out.
KarynK on here is the one to ask really.

Looks like he will grey out to me - the discoloured or bleached looking line is the mane he was born with as a foal and nothing to do with feeding or nutrition.

You can usually tell a grey by the white hairs like specacles around his eyes.

Not a bad looking baby but could do with some condition on him. Agree with the boxy foot though but a good farrier should be able to sort that out quite quickly.

what colour is this please?

He is black base probably brown in colour, probably a minimal tobiano possibly sabino as well looks like a grey, if you look round the eyes. The discolouration on the mane is probably sun bleach on the foal coat, but as there are no proper breeding detail there are several possibilities as to what colour genes he actually has and carries!!

As for the description, his "potential", his conformation, general condition, a lack of breeding detail and the fact he still has his gonads, well ! There are a not nicer examples out there looking for a home where the colour is known.
