Natalie_H, That's exactly what I thought, especially the bit about "black" horses being quite rare......so I'll carry on calling him a very dark bay !

Have ticked as many as possible but also have a cremello and two fleabitten greys

Our appaloosa is a few spot so more white than spotty (about 5 spots if you look hard

I'm another pink horsey owner. I consider him chestnut roan though rather than strawberry roan as he is a really rich chestnut colour at the moment with a frosted appaloosa bottom.

amc - your horse is brown!

brown is a horse that looks black but has brown points, and a black horse is a horse that has only black ie.no brown hairs all over

"Bay:
A horse with a reddish coat and black mane, tail and points (i.e. the limbs and muzzle). The coat colour can vary from red, to brown, to yellowish, and dapples may be present on the coat, especially in the summer.

Black:
A horse with a completely black coat with no traces of brown hairs. White markings are permitted on the face and legs. If there are any brown hairs (usually on the muzzle)then the horse is considered to be brown regardless of how dark the rest of the coat is.

Brown:
This is a horse with a mixture of black and brown hairs with a dark brown mane and tail. A very dark brown horse may appear black, although it is likely to have a lighter coloured muzzle. "

thats what i was taught anyway, from the pics in your sig the horse looklike a brown horse.

My horse is described as brown on his passport, but his mane & tail are black - so I consider him very dark bay. There are no traces of brown on him during winter - he is totally black - but he has a brown muzzle & points during summer.

Mmm I'll look into it as I would have described him as a dark bay.... I always thought that a brown horse would have a brown mane & tail ? Otherwise it would be a bay but will research it a bit as I'm now wanting to know
